Clean the printhead nozzles.
Dampen a microfiber cloth with distilled water. Be sure to use distilled water to prevent any residue from being left behind. Avoid using a paper towel that could leave lint on your printhead. Carefully clean your printhead with the wet cloth to remove dried ink.
Remove the ink cartridge from your printer and then dip a cotton swab in hot water or isopropyl alcohol and rub it against the print head. This should loosen any crusted ink.
The sponge end of a blocked printer head can be cleaned with only one liquid other than water. This liquid is isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol isn`t strong enough to melt the sponge but is still strong enough to dissolve the ink inside the blocked printer head.
Although different brands of cleaning solution will slightly vary when it comes to ingredients and ingredient ratios, they are largely based on the same three components: Distilled water. Isopropyl alcohol. Detergent.
NOTE 1: While warm tap water is most readily available in the home, use of distilled water is suggested as it is technically safer for the printhead as it does not contain calcium or contaminants which could clog ink nozzles and/or impact the printhead`s long term performance.
If streaks or white lines appear on your labels, you can clean the print head. Caution: Do not use benzine, paint thinner, or other chemicals to clean the printer.
Printheads can be thoroughly cleaned by soaking them in a solution of water and ammonia for several hours and then washing them under warm running water. This method has worked for others, and it`s also cheaper than replacing the printheads.
One of the best, most popular solvents for ink jet printers is MEK. MEK is a versatile chemical solvent with a high evaporation rate, and for this reason is one of the preferred solvents for ink jet printers. Due to its high evaporation rate, inks produced with MEK have the ability to dry quickly.
If you only want to clean the surface of the head, ethanol should be fine. If you`re trying to unclog it, soaking in ethanol can help. If you embark on cleaning out the head in this manner, you have to keep going until there is no ink left inside the head and the alcohol remains clear.
A common method for cleaning the nozzle is to use a solvent like acetone.
Acetone, also sold as fingernail polish remover, can be applied with a cotton ball to dissolve some of the ink into a liquid again. This is not a perfect method, but may be the only one easily available. The paper will end up grey and smudged, but new printing or writing should be clearly visible on top of the smudge.
Distilled water is simply better for cleaning. What comes from your tap is “hard water,” meaning it contains minerals. When it dries, those minerals often leave water marks and spots on some types of fabric and glass. Since distilled water is pure, it doesn`t leave residue the way tap water can.
As a general rule, you can use bottled water instead of distilled water for most everyday tasks; however, it is important to check the label on the bottled water to determine its contents and suitability for your specific needs, as well as keep in mind that not all bottled water is the same.
No matter which surface you are cleaning, distilled water will not leave any residue. Therefore, distilled water is best for cleaning any surface, as it increases the water cleaning features.
If you`re still experiencing quality issues or printhead errors, then there may be other problems at play. Before taking any other actions, it`s recommended that you clean the printhead and ink cartridges four or five more times.
Clean Your Print Cartridge Manually
First, locate your print head. Next, dip a q-tip in a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and warm, not hot, water. Swab the q-tip along your print head and dislodge any dry pieces of ink that may be causing blockages.
First of all I just gave it a quick shot on the bottom of the cartridge (head section), any WD40 will be washed off or thru in a short period of time by the ink flowing through, maybe a few prints. I had no problem, my first print after using WD40 was fine. Run a few 4×6 thru first to be sure.
Avoiding More Than Three Print Cleaning Cycles
You cannot run more than three print cleaning cycles at a time. Running any more than three such cycles will result in a build-up of ink in the print head nozzles. And, as we`ve learned already, this ink will soon dry and give you problems, if not tomorrow then very soon.
Bleach is typically used to disinfect and sanitize fabrics as well as ceramics and dishes, while ammonia effectively cleans hard surfaces such as glass and tile. Remember to never mix bleach and ammonia. The combination releases toxic fumes.
Ammonia evaporates very quickly, but this is why ammonia is so popular with printers. The ammonia in the color paste evaporates away in the print dyer and does not leave residue in the printed color. Alkaline residue in the printed color causes problems with colorfastness.
In general, it is best to use the purest isopropyl alcohol (99%) available to you. Alcohol that is 90% pure also works well. You can use 70% pure isopropyl alcohol, but if you do, you must wait much longer after cleaning to ensure that it is completely dry.
Soak the Printhead
Fill a bowl with warm water (or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the printhead) and place the printhead directly in it. Let it sit for five minutes or so. Pull the printhead out of the water and use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to remove the dried ink.
