Epson Stylus Photo R300
I don’t really understand how to clean this thing, and the instructions aren’t clear. Kit has a syringe, little hose, and a bottle of fluid. The heads are probably very seriously clogged at this point.

Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
Don’t worry about the paper towel. Keep the heads as far to the right as you can and the fluid will just go into the waste sponge underneath. There’s nothing you can damage with the fluid. I wouldn’t worry about the pad that got torn. Just insert the syringe in the nozzle and gently push the fluid down into the heads. This site sold tens of thousands of those kits and I guess the instructions were pretty good because there was never a single complaint.

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

The sponge end of a blocked printer head can be cleaned with only one liquid other than water. This liquid is isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol isn`t strong enough to melt the sponge but is still strong enough to dissolve the ink inside the blocked printer head.
The Power Cleaning utility allows you to replace all of the ink inside the ink tubes. In the following situations, you may need to use this feature to improve the print quality. You printed or performed head cleaning when the ink levels were too low to be seen in the ink tank windows.
If the hot water soak did not unclog the print head, place the cartridge printer head in isopropyl alcohol and allow it to soak overnight. Use a damp paper towel to wipe off the print head area and dry carefully.
Open the Applications folder, open the EPSON Printer Utility3, select your Epson printer, and click OK. Then select Head Cleaning. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the cleaning cycle, which lasts around 1 minute.
Press and hold the power button and the help button at the same time until the Power Cleaning screen appears on the LCD screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the Power Cleaning. When the Power Cleaning is finished, run a nozzle check.
First, we soak the printhead in cleaning solutions for a few hours. Then, we will use a high-pressure steamer to open up the nozzles and blow away debris. Finally, we will use an ultrasonic cleaner to remove clogging particles and dried ink.
Gently slide a paper towel under the PRINTHEAD/CARRIAGE assembly. You`ll see a round mesh ink port where ink flows into the PRINTHEAD. Thoroughly dampen the ink port with 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 milliliters) of distilled water. Use of an eye-dropper or syringe works best; pour or drip water directly into ink port.
Soak the Printhead

Fill a bowl with warm water (or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the printhead) and place the printhead directly in it. Let it sit for five minutes or so. Pull the printhead out of the water and use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to remove the dried ink.

Clean the printhead nozzles.

Dampen a microfiber cloth with distilled water. Be sure to use distilled water to prevent any residue from being left behind. Avoid using a paper towel that could leave lint on your printhead. Carefully clean your printhead with the wet cloth to remove dried ink.

If you still see white or dark lines or missing nozzles in your printouts, even after cleaning the print head several times, you can run a Power Cleaning. If you do not see improvement after running a Power Cleaning, turn off the product and wait at least 12 hours before running another Power Cleaning.
