My older printer says paper jam in tray 3, (legal paper) below tray 2 (letter paper) but there is no paper jam. Possible causes? Cleaning the roller with water on a cloth often helps. What should I do? Thanks!

You would need to replace the pickup roller. It’s not too difficult to do. http://www.precisionroller.com/paper-feed-components-for-hp-laserjet-2430/details_36378.html

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Clean the rollers inside the printer, and then try to print again. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.
Loading paper that is stuck together, frayed, curled or bent can cause a jam. Overloading the paper tray, loading different thicknesses of paper in the tray or using paper that isn`t appropriate for your particular printer can all result in a jammed printer.
The guides in the paper tray are there to make sure the stack of paper is exactly where the printer was designed to grab from. If the paper is even slightly askew, the rollers will pick it up a little crooked, and — guess what — the crooked sheet will immediately get jammed.
Over time, paper absorbs and loses moisture which causes it to warp, or not lie perfectly flat. This can create print quality issues like jamming and is something to consider when using a printer that hasn`t been used for a while.
A paper jam is when paper or other printed material gets stuck or lodged in a printer and cannot eject.
Check inside the printer for any debris that might be causing paper jams. Turn off the printer, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Remove any paper from the input tray. Open the rear access door, and then clean the paper feed rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with filtered water.
The paper might not be engaged with the feed rollers. The paper-width guide is pressed against the paper stack too tightly. The paper tray is not completely inserted into the product. The paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the paper tray.
Slide the paper all the way into the printer. The leading edge of the paper will stop at the Paper Drive Roller. Locate the Paper Sensor/OOPs sensor on the right side of the paper path. It can be seen from the top of the printer with the Top Cover open and has red, black, and blue wires attached to it.
The optical sensor reads the unique media `signature` of the paper by measuring inherent optical properties and comparing them with the signatures of other papers. Once the paper is identified, the printer optimizes printing for the particular paper type.

Paper Jam error but no paper jam
ANSWER : Obviously you didn’t get all the paper cleared out. There is a small scrap in the paper path causing the jam when the paper hits it. You can try clearing it out by inserting something stiff like a piece of file folder from the back of the printer into the paper path and pushing the offending piece out that way.

message error: ADF paper jam
ANSWER : There is a thin plastic arm that the paper pushes on. It is spring loaded. If it doesn’t return and unblock the sensor after the paper passes it, you get the paper jam warning. I’m guessing that is the spring you are referring to.
