How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

The printer will not operate if a black ink cartridge is expended or any cartridge is removed. If a color cartridge is expended, you may be able to continue printing temporarily with black ink. It`s best to always have extra cartridges on hand.
Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when you are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged. The print head needs to be kept charged to prevent air bubbles from entering.
Black Print Mode allows you to print only with black ink as a temporary emergency measure to minimise the down time in the event any colour inks are expended, even if there is no replacement cartridges available.
When color ink is expended and black ink still remains, you can continue printing for a short time using only black ink. However, you should replace the expended ink cartridge(s) as soon as possible.
Can you print with one or two empty ink cartridges? The quick answer is: Yes, you can (if you own a printer model that allows it) — but you shouldn`t keep printing with an empty cartridge for too long.
In contrast, thermal printers do not apply ink or toner to the paper. Instead, they use special paper coated with a heat-sensitive layer that changes color as soon as the paper gets close to a heat source. Thermal printers require the use of specialized paper that changes color when exposed to heat.
Access the printer settings. Click the Main tab, and then select the appropriate Quality Option setting. Select plain papers or Envelope as the Type setting. Select the Grayscale check box in Print Options.
If the printer is printing black only, the Ink option in the printer driver may be set to Black instead of Color or a setting in the software may be set to print black only. Also, the print head nozzles may be clogged.
Grayscale printing is used in commercial print shops to print what appear to be `black only` images. What you may not realize is that ALL colours are used when printing something `black only` so the image has a richer appearance.
Check you have the latest drivers installed for your printer, try uninstalling and reinstalling your printer drivers or try changing the driver settings (adjusting the paper settings has been known to solve the problem). Fully Reconfigure the Printer – If all else fails, you can try entirely reconfiguring your printer.
If using the color cartridge, colors print normally but black prints lighter than usual. You can continue to print until print quality becomes unacceptable.
Check the ink levels

Sometimes, the printer may not print black ink because it is low or empty. You can check the ink levels on the printer`s display, or by using the software that came with your printer. If the ink level is low, replace the cartridge or refill it according to the manufacturer`s instructions.

STEP 1 Change Printer Preferences in Windows

Click start and navigate to the Printers and Devices. Right-click your printer and select printing preferences. Then, click on the Grayscale button in the advanced tab to enable black-and-white-only printing.

You can only install two black ink cartridges if your printer uses two different types of black ink. If you are trying to install a black ink cartridge in a color cartridge slot, your printer will not function and you could potentially cause damage to the machine.
The ZINK Zero Ink full-color printing system does not require ink cartridges, toners, or ribbons, and prints in a single pass.
When you mix green, red, blue, and yellow ink, each ink that you add absorbs more light. That leaves less light to reflect to your eye. Since the mixture absorbs many colors of light and reflects very little, you end up with black.
Monochrome printing only requires a small amount of black ink, while grayscale printing mixes black and color ink or toner to make up different shades of gray. So, if you use grayscale to print black text, you end up needlessly using your color cartridge.
Even if you change the print settings to print with black ink only, the other ink cartridges must still have ink in them in order for the printer to print. If you choose to print with black ink only, the printer still uses small amounts of ink from all the ink cartridges for occasional servicing tasks.
The ink levels may be low and you may need to refill the ink. Visually check the ink levels. Also make sure you filled the tanks with the correct colors of ink. After you print, the colors in your printout need time to set as the ink dries.
Standard black consists of black ink (100% K) and nothing else, while rich black contains Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. By adjusting the amount of color, you can achieve a deeper and more saturated tone.
Black can be achieved in 2 different ways. Regular black has CMYK values of: C = 0, M = 0, Y = 0, K = 100. Rich black uses CMYK values of: C = 60, M = 60, Y = 60, K = 100.
Why is CMYK black not black? If you use 100% K to create a black in CMYK color mode, you`ll end up with a deep gray, not a true black. To get rich black, you need to add the right amount of all four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

Paper feeds straight through without printing on an Epson R2400
ANSWER : I was able to get it to print the internal test page by holding down the sheet paper feed button while turning the machine on — then continuing to hold the sheet paper feed button. It took several attempts, feeding a page straight through, but eventually it caught the sheet and printed. So it may be a timing issue as others have mentioned. It could still mean that the feed rollers are worn out. The back side of the large D-shaped feed roller has visible abrasion on it. The abrasion is difficult to see as the roller does not stay with the flat side exposed.
