HP LaserJet 1320TN
Hi Folks,

Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
Try this test. Put a page into the manual feeder and do that same test. When the end of the page is just about to enter the printer, open the lid. Take out the toner cartridge and pull back the shutter. Look at the image and see if it is black. The explanation is that there is high voltage going to both the toner cartridge and the charge transfer roller below it. If the image on the drum is black, then the fault is at the transfer roller not getting enough high voltage. The transfer roller pulls the image off of the drum and down onto the paper. It would not be a laser scanner problem as any issue with it would not result in an overall gray image, but combination of gray and black. It will probably turn out to be a bad HV power supply, which will need replacement. I’ve never seen this particular problem on this model.

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

A low ink/toner density setting

Your default setting could be set to low, causing you to get those faint prints. If your printer does have ink/toner density settings, you should be able to find them once you`ve clicked on your printer in `Devices & Printers.

Grayscale printing requires a mixture of ink other than black, as it uses some other colors other than black ink. At the same time, black ink for printing is the only ink used for grayscale printing. While gray-toned colors are combined, these other tones also result in a grayscale image.
If your HP printer not printing black ink correctly, here`s what you should do. Using non-genuine ink cartridges. Printheads that have become clogged. Ink cartridges that are defective or empty.
A gray cast indicates that the drum is not getting or holding a sufficiently strong charge to hold the toner. It looks like either the OPC drum or the corona wire/primary charge roller is not working correctly. Try replacing the cartridge (the drum is part of the cartridge in many HP laser printers, including yours).
First, check your printer settings on the file or picture your trying to print. If your page is setup to print in “grayscale” it will only print in black and white. Change the setting to “default” so it will print in color. If your settings look good from the start, the cartridge may just need to be primed.
Why is CMYK black not black? If you use 100% K to create a black in CMYK color mode, you`ll end up with a deep gray, not a true black. To get rich black, you need to add the right amount of all four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
If your PC or the LCD screen on your printer is telling you that your ink cartridges are full but no ink is passing through to the paper, then it`s most likely that you are dealing with a clogged printhead. Blurry documents and images that appear faded are also signs that it`s time to remove the excess ink.
Reasons why your HP printer has ink but won`t print

This may seem obvious, but it sometimes happens: first make sure your paper tray has paper in it. Misalignment, clogged printheads, faulty data communication or insufficient ink levels can also be sources of the problem.

Check Remaining Ink / Toner Levels & Replace Cartridge if Necessary. Before you do anything complicated, make sure that your printer is not running out of ink or toner. You can visually inspect the remaining cartridge levels on your printer.
Appropriate paper is not being used. The toner cartridges have reached the end of their life. Check the toner cartridges status and replace the toner cartridges of the colors have reached the end of their life.
Check you have the latest drivers installed for your printer, try uninstalling and reinstalling your printer drivers or try changing the driver settings (adjusting the paper settings has been known to solve the problem). Fully Reconfigure the Printer – If all else fails, you can try entirely reconfiguring your printer.
First of all, open the Print preferences and go to the Paper/Quality tab (for HP printers). Make sure that the Color option is selected here instead of Black & White. If the Color option is missing, click the Advanced. In the Advanced Options window, set Off for Print in Grayscale under the Document Options section.

Clean the Printhead

What is this? Sometimes, the printhead nozzles get clogged, due to which your printer fails to print black or any other color. The print output is also faded or of a different color. To fix it, you can clean the printhead physically or from the printer settings.

What repair needs to be done for a "50 needs repair" message on an HP Laserjet IIIP?
ANSWER : I don’t know what you mean by good toner cartridges. They haven’t been built in about 10 years, so if they are new OEMs in the box, they are guaranteed to fail. The 50 error on that printer is mostly a burned out fuser lamp. This site was sold, so as you can see, there are no more kits available.
