Epson printers use individual ink cartridges, which means each cartridge is filled with a specific ink color. This is unlike HP`s tricolor cartridges that contain three ink colors in one cartridge.
All cartridges must be installed with ink for printing and printer maintenance. For print quality, some ink remains in replaced cartridges. Designed for EPSON cartridges only: Other brands of ink supplies are not compatible and, if described as compatible, may not function properly or continuously.

Can You Print Black and White with Color Ink? The answer too `can you print black and white with color ink` is… Maybe. Further the poor quality of material used inside the counterfeit ink bottles can lead to leaks causing permanent staining and damage to the printer`s hardware.
Not all printers use the same ink. Inkjet printers and laser printers differ because one uses liquid ink and one uses toner powder. Similarly, not all inkjet printers are the same in that some inkjet printers use dye-based ink and some use pigment-based ink.
The reason is dye ink and pigment ink has different base solutions. Pigments need a chemical matrix to suspend in the liquid. Once you break the matrix, the pigment particles will slowly conjugate and form clogs. Therefore, you should use up the old ink as much as possible before switching.
What Is Pigment Ink? Pigment-based ink is a type of ink used to color paper and other surfaces. Pigments are tiny particles of solid matter suspended in a liquid or gas medium, such as water or air. In this case, the pigment is mixed with an oil-based carrier.
Toner cartridges are notably faster than ink cartridges, using laser technology to produce accurate, sharp print quality. The accuracy of the heated powder means it also dries faster and is less likely to smudge while the page is still fresh.
Usually stored in a single cartridge, printer toner is a powder-based print medium made from granulated plastics that allows for greater accuracy and control. Toner powder is collected and then transferred to paper by the charged printing drum.
Epson ink cartridges come with a “Best If Used By” date. This date appears to be approximately two years after the date of manufacture. Epson recommends replacing your installed ink cartridges after six months, whether they`re empty or not, to ensure high-quality prints.

Epson ink cartridge leaking?
ANSWER : Posting this cause it worked for me. I have an Artisan 837 that was leaving pools of blue on the page. I tried Epson’s recommendation of cleaning the print path by pressing the copy button on the control panel (with nothing on the flatbed). Printed 5 pages and the last 2 were clean. Did a test print and the problem was back. Repeated a few times with the problem reocccuring. Switched out the cartridge. no better and now the printer doesn’t recognize its own brand cartridge. Yet, it accepts the 3rd party one.
