Power off the printer by holding the power button for 60 seconds straight. This will reset the memory of the cartridge in there and will consider it as a new one.
In the product software, double-click Printer Actions ( ). Double-click Maintenance Tasks ( ). The HP Toolbox opens. Click Clean Ink Cartridges, and then follow the on-screen instructions to clean the cartridges.
Just above the circuit board on most printer cartridges, you`ll find a small button. You`ve seen these tiny buttons before on cell phones, phone chargers, etc. This is your reset button, and the only way to get in there is either with a paper clip or the tip of a pen (which will leave a tiny ink smudge on the button).
One or both empty ink level icons blink, the Ink Alert light is on, and the Resume light and Error icon blink. This condition occurs when at least one ink cartridge is incompatible or the ink levels are low. Make sure your ink cartridges are compatible with your printer and there is adequate ink in the cartridges.
Turn the product on while you press and hold the Resume button for 10-20 seconds. The Attention light turns on. Release the Resume button. The Attention and Ready lights cycle while the product restores factory defaults.
Press the button on the chip-reset tool for several seconds until the LED light on the device goes off. Then, unlock the reset tool from the cartridge. Use the resetter with other cartridges and install them back into the corresponding slots in your printer. Voila!
There are chips inside the original cartridges to record how many pages were printed and they cannot be reset. As a result the printer reads the chips and tells you that the cartridges are empty, even though they are not. This is why you are getting the “ink low” message even though the ink tank is at full capacity.
If your printer is turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer. Keep the power plug unplugged for 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the wall, and turn on the printer. If the error persists, remove the cartridge from the printer, clean the cartridge contacts with a cloth, and reinstall the cartridges.

ANSWER : HP Color Laser Jet 1600 – Thanks for all the above information. Even though the 1600 is a different printer, I followed the above: “…go to “System Configuration”; then to “Print Quality”; I then get a choice of “Replace Supplies” and then “Overide Out”…” Selecting “Overide Out” got my 1600 back to printing, although I did have do perform the steps TWICE before it seemed to take affect. Not sure what was going on, but I’m happy that people put the information out there for the rest of us to have.
