HP Photosmart 5510
We have an HP Photosmart printer & it has always been touchy with paper jams. We have kept up with the routine maintenance provided by the manufacturer through the “tools” functions in the “setup” menu.

Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
There’s only the one sensor in the printer that is just before it gets under the cartridge path. Once the paper hits that sensor, the printer assumes that it is ready to get print on it and prints until the job is done, whether the paper moves or not. If it doesn’t hit the sensor or doesn’t clear it after printing, then the printer signals a paper jam. I’ve never seen an inkjet where the transport mechanism after the pickup roller fails to move the paper. So, if it picks up and gets to the sensor, the only thing I’ve ever seen stop it is a scrap of paper left behind after someone impatiently yanked a jammed paper out. What to try is to take a piece of file folder and shove it down the paper path in the direction paper normally moves. The file folder is usually stiff enough to push out any unseen leftover scraps of paper.

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced technical support :

Insert the stack of paper into the product, and then gently push the paper guides snugly against the paper. Make sure that the paper is fully inserted into the product. Try printing again. If the issue is not resolved, try loading different brands of paper and different types of paper, one type at a time.
Remove the stack of paper from the tray. Check for obstructions inside the tray. Use a flashlight to view the mechanism inside the tray to make sure that nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.
There are a few things that could be the cause of this problem, including: Empty ink or toner cartridges that need replacing. Ink or toner cartridges that have become dislodged from their proper place. The wrong paper size loaded in the input tray.
If the paper feed rollers are dirty or paper powder is attached to it, paper may not be fed properly. In this case, clean the paper feed rollers. Cleaning will wear out the paper feed rollers, so perform this only when necessary. Make sure that the power is turned on and remove any paper from the rear tray.
Shut down the computer, then press the paper button to eject the jammed paper. If the error does not clear, open the printer cover and remove all of the paper inside, including any torn pieces. Then, reload the paper in the sheet feeder and press paper button to resume printing.
For cleaning, HP recommends using HP Equipment Cleaning Wipes, but you can use an HP-approved lint-free wipe and deionized or distilled water. Note: If dark spots appear on back side of prints, clean drum screen. Note: If minilab prints more than 2000 prints each day, clean drum screen up to twice daily.
With dot matrix printers, paper is often feed through pins on a wheel that grab and slowly move paper through the printer. With inkjet and other page printers, paper is fed through the printer with rollers that grab and move the paper through the printer.
Reasons why your HP printer has ink but won`t print

This may seem obvious, but it sometimes happens: first make sure your paper tray has paper in it. Misalignment, clogged printheads, faulty data communication or insufficient ink levels can also be sources of the problem.

If the paper guides are too tight, the paper might be held in the tray and not allowed to feed into the product. Try the print job again.
