How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Unlike Piezo Electrical Inkjet technology (which pushes the ink out by using mechanical force) the HP Designjet Printheads use thermal technology to push the ink out, together with an integrated circuit which routes signals to the hundreds of ink nozzles providing precision and predictable output.
The large black cartridge is pigmented black, primarily used for text and some graphics on plain paper. The bow tie thinner cartridge is the photo cartridge. It contains dye based black ink and is designed for printing on photo paper.
The printhead is a component in a printer that houses ink cartridges. It`s typically located under the cover of your printer, and it can become clogged with ink over time.
The ink tank feeds its liquid ink down to the separate printhead inside the printer which in turn dispenses the ink in the form of droplets onto the page to form text or images. Sometimes, the ink tank sits directly on top of and directly feeds into the printhead, such as with Epson and Canon Printers.
Print head stepper motor – A stepper motor moves the print head assembly (print head and ink cartridges) back and forth across the paper. Some printers have another stepper motor to park the print head assembly when the printer is not in use.
You can continue to print with one or more empty cartridges, but HP recommends replacing them as soon as possible to avoid printhead damage.
What is a printhead? The printhead is a printer component that helps transfer ink onto the page. It does this by firing tiny droplets of ink via numerous printer nozzles to create a desired print. When one of these nozzles gets clogged your prints appear faded or streaky.
Essentially the printhead contains an ink chamber, with a piezo electric actuator, made of a material such as Lead Zirconium Titanium (PZT). When an external electrical charge is applied to PZT it changes shape, forcing a drop of ink from the ink chamber and out through the nozzle.
When referring to a non-impact printer, like an inkjet printer, a nozzle is a small hole found on a printer cartridge`s print head. Nozzles can be smaller than a human hair. Each nozzle produces millions of ink droplets used in creating the images and text generated by the printer.
A print head scratch occurs when an accumulation of dust or debris gets stuck in your machine. And if this happens, the damage cannot be fixed. In most cases, you would need to purchase a new printhead. That`s why it`s important to keep the dust out, away from your machine.
The printer`s laser projects your print onto a drum. A drum then uses static electricity to attract the dry toner to the drum`s cylinder. The drum then rolls the toner onto the paper to create your print. The toner powder is melted and pressed onto the paper with heat from the fuser as it goes through a set of rollers.
The warranty period for the printheads is 1000 cc of ink through the printhead (previously 700 cc), or the expiration date printed on the printhead, whichever comes first. However, printheads may last much longer than 1000 cc of ink. On average, printheads should last through 2-3 ink cartridges.

Removing the print head on a Pixma MX 475?
ANSWER : Take out the ink tanks. On the right side there is a plastic release lever. Lift it up and the heads will unlock. Reach in and remove the heads. Take it to the sink and run hot water through the screens on top and then flip it over and run hot water over the heads. Repeat a few times until the water is clear. Reinstall and try again. It might take a couple pages for the print to look good.

can't align print head horizontally despite running program
ANSWER : Don’t call that number, it’s a phishing scam number as far as I can tell. Last thing you want to do is have them remote into your computer (they may try hacking you in the background to try & steal bank info/saved passwords) or give them a CC number for tech help since they are not directly affiliated with Epson. As far as Epson’s site shows there is no toll free tech line, only 2 800s listed on their site and 1 is presales other is for supply orders.

Print head sponges
ANSWER : Yes, but Epson won’t sell them to you. If you can figure out how to get to them, you can just take them out and wash them in hot water. Otherwise, Google how to reset the warning message on your model. The tanks hold much more ink than the warning permits.
