How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced technical support :

Verify you are using a NEW toner cartridge.

Swapping toner cartridges from one machine to another or installing a partially used toner cartridge may cause this problem. If you install a partially used toner cartridge, your Brother machine is unable to recognize toner consumption correctly which will cause this problem.

Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly.

If you install a new toner cartridge but the “Toner Low”, “Replace Toner” or “Toner Ended” error indication remains, the toner cartridge may not be installed correctly. Reinstall the toner cartridge, referring to the instructions on how to replace the toner cartridge.

Press the tiny reset button located beside the chip and hold for 10 seconds. Depending on the brand and model of the cartridge, you may not need to hold the button for 10 seconds, but it won`t harm the cartridge so do it anyway just to be safe.
Hold each ink cartridge as it would be installed in the machine and locate the black Ink Sensor in the Ink Sensor Window at the top of the cartridge.
Inspect the inside of the printer for the connection point. With a lint-free/dry cloth lightly wipe the contacts on both cartridges and printer to remove any dirt, or residue being careful not to cause any damage. Replace the cartridges in the printer. Power the printer back on.
When “Toner Low” is displayed, prepare a new toner cartridge. If you do not have a new toner cartridge at hand and need printing before obtaining it, you can continue printing about 20 pages(*1) by opening and closing the front cover or the output tray. Print quality is not guaranteed.
– If a toner cartridge from another machine was installed (even if there`s still toner left in the used cartridge), the message `Toner Empty` or `Toner Low` will continue to appear on the display. To clear the message a new, genuine Brother toner must be installed.
Locate the waste toner container sensor near the bottom of the Waste Toner Container. Clean the transparent plastic square. Clean the black sensors inside the printer, where the waste toner container sensor is located during normal operation. Power on the printer without the Waste Toner Container installed.
If your machine`s cyan, magenta, or yellow toners run out, you can choose Mono in the printer driver to allow you to keep printing. You`ll be able to keep printing until the black toner runs out. When the black toner runs out, you won`t be able to print until you replace it.

Verify the ink cartridge(s) is inserted properly. Some cartridges snap in place, and if they are not inserted fully, the printer won`t print anything. If a lever is moved from its original position to allow for installation of ink cartridges, ensure it is returned to its original position.

Waste Toner Cartridge is empty but printer is still telling me to replace it
ANSWER : All of the ones I’ve seen are optical. Light shines through a transparent section of the waste box onto a photocell. If toner builds up past that area, it gives a warning to replace it. Possibly toner dust has gotten on the photocell.
