Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws from the bottom of the scanner. Holding the top and bottom cover together, turn the unit back over so that the glass side is facing up. Carefully lift the top cover off the base. Lift the top cover straight up off of the base.
Locate the scanning strip insidethe ADF duplex background unit slot. Use a clean, lint-free clothslightly moistened with warm water or spray the glass cleaner on aclean, lint-free cloth.
Flatbed scanners have a broad glass scanning surface that helps to keep documents flat. Accidents can crack or shatter the glass, but leave the scanner otherwise usable. Replace the broken scanner glass yourself to save your business the cost of purchasing new equipment.
Lift the scanner assembly away from the printer. If you need to detach the display, lay the scanner assembly upside down, lower the display assembly, push it to the right, and then adjust the angle of the display until it drops away from the scanner.
Never use alcohol, thinner, or corrosive solvent to clean the scanner. These chemicals can damage the scanner components as well as the case.
Don`t use paper towels because they can leave dust on the glass. Don`t use compressed air because it can force dust under the glass, which will need removal by a professional cleaner.
When figuring out how to replace glass in a double-pane window, know that you can replace window glass without having to remove the entire window. Older double-pane window glass can be repaired while the window remains in the frame. Make sure the glass only has a few cracks and the pieces are still fairly large.
This should work indeed. What you will want to do is to visit all of your local thrift stores and look for an old scanner for $5 or so. The glass is easy to remove, usually held on with double-sided tape. Since they are tempered, they are almost impossible to break during disassembly.

Re: What is a platen? I the case of a flatbed scanner, photocopier, or MFD (Multi Function Device) the glass where you place the document is the platen. With the DIY book scanners they are using two pieces of glass/plastic in a V shape (or one piece bent into a V shape) to accommodate an open book in a V shaped cradle.

How to I clean the optics inside my scanner
ANSWER : There’s a small glass on the left side of the big one. There’s one Torx screw holding it. Remove the glass and you have access to the optical mirrors. You can either blow it out with an air can or use a cotton swab and clean the mirrors with that. If the mirror assembly isn’t parked under the glass, then start a copy with the ADF and when the mirror parks, pull out the plug.

laser scanner assembly removal
ANSWER : You have to remove the cover on the right side of the printer. Then take the back panel off. Then remove the screws holding the top cover on, disconnect the arm on the right side of the top cover and then lift it off. The scanner assy. is on top, held in by 4 screws. and a couple of connectors.

Error message reads remove and check right cartridge
ANSWER : You can try cleaning the contacts on the back of the cartridge and the ones that they contact in the printer. Other than that, you have to replace the cartridge. I once had one that did the same thing. I swapped the cartridge with another printer of the same model and both printers worked fine. I swapped them back and the original printer got the same error. The other printer had no problem with either cartridge. I swapped them back and left them that way.
