Check that the printer is powered on, open the front cover and wait until the print head moves to the center. Remove all ink tanks. Raise the print head lock lever, and remove the print head.
Select Start , then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Scroll down to Related Settings and select Print server properties. Select the Drivers tab, and see if your printer is listed. If it is, you`re all set.
The quick answer is: Yes, you can (if you own a printer model that allows it) — but you shouldn`t keep printing with an empty cartridge for too long. Why? Because running on an empty cartridge for too long can cause your printhead to overheat resulting in irreversible printer damage.
It`s usually because the printhead inside your printer is clogged or dried out. Like with most printers, Canon printheads can clog due to ink or dust drying up and collecting in the nozzle.
Printer Settings Menu

Press (Settings/Registration). Press [Function Settings] → [Printer] → [Printer Settings].

When color ink is expended and black ink still remains, you can continue printing for a short time using only black ink. However, you should replace the expended ink cartridge(s) as soon as possible.
If you want to print using only the black ink or the color ink cartridge, follow the steps below. Open the printer driver setup window. Click Print Options… on the Page Setup tab. Select the ink cartridge(s) to be used for printing and click OK.
Ink cartridges can dry out over time. If they are sitting in your machine for an extended period, they will eventually dry up and become unusable. The simplest way to combat this problem is by printing more frequently or running regular cleans and ink tests to ensure the nozzles remain clean.
The printhead lock is a piece of plastic that prevents the printhead from moving towards the left. A common way to unlock it is by turning on the power. As soon as you see the lock moves, you`ll cut the power off.
Open Control Panel

Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Under Printers & scanners, look for your printer. If you see your printer listed, you`ll know it`s installed. If you don`t see your printer listed, select Add a printer or scanner.
There`s another place in your Windows 10 machine where the Devices and Printers link is found and the feature is called the universal Settings app. There are many ways in launching the app itself and the easiest way in doing so is by pressing the Windows + I keyboard shortcut combination.
First of all, there are the standard Windows printer removal methods, which you should definitely try: Open Settings -> Devices -> Printers and Scanners (or run a quick access URI command: ms-settings:printers ); Select a printer you want to remove and click Remove Device; Confirm the printer removal.
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > Add a printer or scanner.
Quick Menu is a utility software included in the initial software setup for your printer that allows you to easily start the applications and manuals supplied with your printer and access online product information. Installation of Quick Menu is optional, however it is recommended to make the most of your printer.
You can only install two black ink cartridges if your printer uses two different types of black ink. If you are trying to install a black ink cartridge in a color cartridge slot, your printer will not function and you could potentially cause damage to the machine.
If a FINE cartridge runs out of ink, you can print with either color or black FINE cartridge, in whichever ink remains, only for a while. However the print quality may be reduced compared to when printing with both cartridges. We recommend to use a new FINE cartridge in order to obtain optimum qualities.
If your machine`s cyan, magenta, or yellow toners run out, you can choose Mono in the printer driver to allow you to keep printing.
Once a cartridge is empty- black OR color, doesn`t matter- the printer will no longer work until that cartridge is replaced. All is not lost if you do want an all-in-one, though.
When your run out of black ink you may still be able to print using color ink. InkJet printers will sometimes allow you to make a print in blue, magenta, or whatever colors are available.
Black Print Mode allows you to print only with black ink as a temporary emergency measure to minimise the down time in the event any colour inks are expended, even if there is no replacement cartridges available.
The sponge end of a blocked printer head can be cleaned with only one liquid other than water. This liquid is isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol isn`t strong enough to melt the sponge but is still strong enough to dissolve the ink inside the blocked printer head.
The printhead is a component in a printer that houses ink cartridges. It`s typically located under the cover of your printer, and it can become clogged with ink over time.
Soak the Printhead

Fill a bowl with warm water (or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the printhead) and place the printhead directly in it. Let it sit for five minutes or so. Pull the printhead out of the water and use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to remove the dried ink.
