How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

As the imaging drum rotates, it applies an electrostatic charge to the toner particles on its surface. The transfer roller, which is usually a thin, cylindrical roller made of rubber or foam, applies pressure and a positive charge to the back of the paper as it moves through the printer or copier.
A printer transfer roll is a component in your office`s laser printers that transfers images onto paper. Made of rubber and metal, the transfer roll is a user-serviceable part you can clean or replace. The transfer roll works along with your printer`s toner cartridges, drum and fuser to complete the printing process.
A transfer roller (or a transfer corona) applies a charge to the paper as it passes. The charged paper attracts the toner and the toner is transferred from the imaging drum to the paper.
Like a photocopier, laser printers read the electronic data from your computer and beam this information onto a drum inside the printer, which builds up a pattern of static electricity. This attracts a dry powder called toner onto the paper which is then fused using heated rollers.
Signs of a bad transfer roller include streaking, squealing, jamming and odors emanating from the printer. Troubleshoot your transfer rollers to restore your prints to their normal high quality.
The transfer roll sits beyond the drum and before the fuser. As paper moves through your laser printer, it passes through each component to complete the printing process. The drum receives the image/text elements from your computer and adds in toner, and the paper is then sent to the transfer roll.
A common example of transfer printing is printing of T-shirts at market stalls. Often the Film release method is used. The customer chooses the T-shirt and the required pattern. The garment and paper holding the pattern are placed in a heated press and within a minute the customer walks away with the printed T-shirt.
Transfer printing uses a paper substrate that acts as an intermediary and is increasingly inkjet printed with sublimating or other dyes. The dye from the paper is either sublimated onto cloth made mostly of polyester during the transfer process or it is trapped beneath a “film” on cloth made of various fibre types.
In laser printing, the function of a transfer roller is to apply an electrical charge to a sheet of paper to move the representation of an image or text (consisting of toner) from the imaging drum to the paper.
An image drum is the image carrier or imaging device used in some non-impact methods of printing. The image being printed is created on the surface of the image drum, which then transfers toner onto the substrate in the correct position to form the final printed image.
There are two principle techniques for transferring photocopies. Both rely on a typical laser printed image (books, newspaper or magazines may be used with the adhesive transfer process). Adhesive transfer works by gluing the image face down to the substrate then wetting the back and carefully rubbing away the paper.
To keep the paper from clinging to the drum, it is discharged by the detac corona wire immediately after picking up the toner.
Magnetite, of course, is magnetic, and this is why your toner can produce a ferromagnetic fluid. Other ingredients in toner cartridges include waxes, polymers and pigments. Many formulations are water or alcohol based and the toner is actually prepared as an emulsion which is filtered and dried.
Cleaning other rollers

Do not clean the transfer roller; alcohol and pressing on the roller can damage the roller and cause print-quality problems.

Replace the transfer roller when the percentage of remaining life is less than 20 percent.
Insert the transfer-roller removal hook around the left end of the metal shaft near the blue gear (callout 1). Lift the hook up (callout 2) to disengage the left side of the transfer roller. Slide the transfer roller to the left, and then lift up to remove it.
The paper might not be engaged with the feed rollers. The paper-width guide is pressed against the paper stack too tightly. The paper tray is not completely inserted into the product. The paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the paper tray.
If the paper feed rollers are dirty or paper powder is attached to it, paper may not be fed properly. In this case, clean the paper feed rollers. Cleaning will wear out the paper feed rollers, so perform this only when necessary. Make sure that the power is turned on and remove any paper from the rear tray.
If roll paper does not feed, cut the end straight across and uncurl it by rolling it backward, if necessary. Then reload the paper. If thick media does not feed, make sure you are loading it straight into the product, not at an angle. If paper jams when you print on both sides of the paper, try loading fewer sheets.
What is DTF printing? DTF printing involves printing a design onto a piece of PET film (a special film with a coating that helps transfer designs) using water-based inks and a special powder adhesive. Then, the design on the PET film is heat transferred to fabric using a heat press machine.
Most types of Inkjet printers and inks would work with the transfer paper. You do not need to change anything or modify your printer in anyway. If you have an inkjet printer at home or have access to one, it will work.
DTF stands for Direct To Film. This technique involves printing your design directly onto a film and then transferring it to a T-shirt made of cotton, polyester, or their blends, regardless of their colour, as it can work with white ink.
Transfer paper is used in textiles and arts and crafts projects. Transfer paper is a thin piece of paper coated with wax and pigment. Often, an ink-jet or other printer is used to print the image on the transfer paper. A heat press can transfer the image onto clothing, canvas, or other surface.

Minolta Pageworks L printer
ANSWER : I’m not familiar with that model. I do have to say that 8 years in storage will have detrimental results. I have never seen any printer request a transfer roller change. They do come as part of maintenance kits in HP series printers. Transfer rollers really don’t wear out. Worst that happens is they get toner on them. Their function is to charge the back of the paper and pull the toner down on it. That being said, you probably will have a host of other issues. Any drum wiper blade will have deteriorated necessitating replacement of the drums. The fuser assy. will probably have suffered damage to the pressure roller from sitting in the same position without rotation for 8 years. Depending on storage conditions, the toners might have suffered as well. In my opinion, it will cost you more to fix it than replace it. Test print procedure is Chapter 3, item 5 in the user manual http://printer.konicaminolta.net/drivers/manuals/pageworks/cpw.pdf
