Brother MFC 9420CN
Hi all, I’m getting a “Toner Empty K” message, but I haven’t been able to figure out whether it’s possible to override. I did find this thread here, but the instructions don’t match my 9420CN. Also, what is the most cost-effective way to refill the cartridge with toner?

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced technical support :

The toner cartridge or the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly is not installed correctly. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit, and reinstall the toner cartridge back in the drum unit.
Sometimes Brother printer will still say “Low Toner”, “Replace Toner” or “Toner Empty” after installing a new toner or drum unit. The possible reason is that the printer failed to reset the counting gear on the toner cartridge. You need to manually reset the toner cartridge in order to make it work as a full new toner.
Step 1 – Open the front cover of the Brother MFC-9320/MFC-9120CN/MFC-9010CN. Step 2 – Press the “CLEAR/BACK” button in the printer. Step 3 – Use arrows to select toner in question (“std” or “str” I assume is for “standard” or “starter”). Step 4 – Select option #1 “Reset“.
[Settings]>[All Settings]>[Initial Setup]>[Reset]. to display the type of reset functions, and then press the reset function you want to use. The LCD displays [Machine will reboot after resetting. Press [OK] for 2 seconds to confirm.].
Once a cartridge has been used until it is empty the chip records that the cartridge has no remaining ink or toner and so when it`s refilled, the chip needs to be reset. If this isn`t done, then the printer will fail to recognise the cartridge.
Verify you are using a NEW toner cartridge.

When replacing the toner cartridge, you MUST install a brand new, unused toner cartridge in order to reset the toner status. Swapping toner cartridges from one machine to another or installing a partially used toner cartridge may cause this problem.

“Toner Error” will appear on your machine`s display if one or more toner cartridges are not installed or not installed correctly.
Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly.

If you install a new toner cartridge but the “Toner Low”, “Replace Toner” or “Toner Ended” error indication remains, the toner cartridge may not be installed correctly. Reinstall the toner cartridge, referring to the instructions on how to replace the toner cartridge.

Refilled Cartridge Problems

If you filled the cartridge improperly, the printer may not print. When you fill a cartridge, the ink sometimes doesn`t make it all the way to the bottom of the reservoir. Fix this problem by removing the cartridge and injecting more ink into the sponge through the exit hole.

On your computer, in the Windows Notification Area (bottom-right corner of your Windows desktop), right-click the printer icon. In the printer menu, select the Properties or Preferences option. In the printer settings window, the ink or toner levels are displayed for the currently-installed cartridge(s).
The biggest difference between toner and hair dye is the formula. Hair dye contains more hydrogen peroxide, so it creates permanent results that toner cannot achieve.
Streaks, smears and stripes on your printout are all signs of a bad cartridge, as is a lack of a particular color or a color appearing very faint. Sometimes the printer refuses to print if a cartridge is faulty.
The toner cartridge shelf life is 2 years if the protective bag is unopened or 6 months after the protective bag is opened. Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges.
Ink may have run out (The lamp on the ink tank flashes). If printing is in progress, you are recommended to stop printing, replace the ink tank, and then print again.
Locate the waste toner container sensor near the bottom of the Waste Toner Container. Clean the transparent plastic square. Clean the black sensors inside the printer, where the waste toner container sensor is located during normal operation. Power on the printer without the Waste Toner Container installed.
Optical toner sensing. The printer directs a light beam into the toner hopper through a window (light guide). If unblocked by toner, the light exits through an opposite window and is detected by a receiver. When the optical receiver detects light a high percent- age of the time, the printer concludes that toner is low.
Toner Save Mode allows the printer to use less toner on each page.
A resetter is a small plastic tool that physically connects with the printer cartridge chip and tells the chip to reset its memory.
You`ll be able to keep printing until the black toner runs out. When the black toner runs out, you won`t be able to print until you replace it.
There are likely two reasons for this: Printer companies price their devices very competitively, in order to entice customers into buying their products. This leads to a nearly microscopic markup, if any, on most printers. And those devices still require investment, time, engineering and resources in order to produce.
OEM toner cartridges are made by the company that makes the printers they fit in while generic toner cartridges are toner cartridges that third party manufacturers make for branded printers. Generic toner cartridges are actually cartridges that are compatible to the brand of printer you`re using.
This printer comes with a standard toner pack to get your printer up and running.
The most obvious sign of low toner cartridge is poor print quality. Streaking, lines or missed prints are all possible signs that cartridge replacement is imminent. If you have tried rocking the toner cartridge and are still getting poor prints, it is likely time to replace your cartridge.
Reset. Resetting the printer stops printing and clears the current print job received from the active interface. You may want to reset the printer when there is a problem with the print job itself and the printer cannot print successfully.

Toner Problem
ANSWER : There is a strip of plastic film that seals the toner bin to keep it from leaking in transport. If you don’t pull it out, then you will get blanks. Went to a customer once who had the same problem. He tried 3 cartridges and they were all printing blanks.

Problem with toner
ANSWER : Printers get dirty when dust or flakes collect on the printer. If left unchecked, the printer will start producing documents of low print quality. A toner cartridge has a life expectancy of roughly three to six months. It is a good idea to keep a few basic cleaning supplies on hand and clean the printer each time a toner cartridge is replaced. Some of the things needed in the printer cleaning kit would be some lint-free cloth, alcohol, a small brush, gloves, and a spray-n-wipe cleaner.

Expired Toner and Suggestions for Source of Toner
ANSWER : Hi Frank, I had a very similar question two weeks ago, but my “old beloved workhorse” is an HP Laserjet 4L. From the good old days! I too had made bad investments in “new but old truly HP” toner cartridges, hoping to coax more life from my printer. I ended up choosing to try a remanufactured cartridge from www.4inkjets.com. It was a gamble, but the website said they had a 100% satisfaction guarantee. And I can tell you they have lighting fast service. I’ve now printed 50 pages without a flaw. JOY! While the cartridges and technology are different, I suggest you try the same place. And good luck!

Problem with toner
ANSWER : Was that the original problem? If not, then it’s possible you put too much grease on the heater assembly. That would act as an insulator. You just need a thin layer on the heater itself. Otherwise, you can adjust the temperatures in the control panel to apply more heat. Another thing to try is to feed from the Manual Feed tray. That will slow the printing by half and apply more heat.

toner reset problem
ANSWER : There’s a chip on each cartridge. You can just buy replacement chips and that will reset the count back to zero. Then you just watch for the print to start getting light and then you replace the cartridge or refill it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkWi2iqggyY
