Apple`s first printer was the Apple Silentype, released in June 1979, shortly after the Apple II Plus. The Silentype was a thermal printer, which used a special paper and provided 80 column output. Also compatible with the Apple III, the Silentype was a rebranded Trendcom 200.
mac all-in-one laser printer.
Forty years ago, Xerox introduced our first commercial laser printer, called the Xerox 9700. We demonstrated this groundbreaking technology at the 1977 National Computer Conference in Dallas, Texas. That was the world`s first introduction to what is now a fixture of offices everywhere.
A semiconductor diode laser is currently used in laser printers as the light source. It emits NIR light at around 800 nm wavelengths.
Most printers these days are Mac-compatible, but we have seen quite a few printers that work better with Windows PCs. The problem here lies in the driver software that controls the printer, which may be different on Macs and PCs.
The First Printer
The first computer printer designed was a mechanically driven apparatus by Charles Babbage for his Difference Engine in the 19th century. The Difference Engine is an automatic mechanical calculator that was invented to produce error-free tables, which was a complicated process to do by hand.
The Diamond Sutra, a Buddhist book from Dunhuang, China from around 868 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty, is said to be the oldest known printed book. The Diamond Sutra was created with a method known as block printing, which utilized panels of hand-carved wood blocks in reverse.
The laser printer was the first to be invented and was done so in 1969 by Gary Starkweather while working in the Xerox product development team. His idea was to use lasers to imprint an image onto a copier drum which would then be transferred onto paper. Hence, the name `Laser printer`.
Laser printers are faster than inkjet printers too. Print speeds are denoted in pages-per-minute (PPM). Laser printers have print speeds of 14 PPM and higher. The basic laser printer can print about 30 to 40 pages per minute, whereas high-end models churn out more.
Quality: While inkjet printers are considered powerhouses when it comes to high-resolution color printing, laser printers do produce solid color and black and white results.
The typewriter was considered a precursor to printers and keyboards, was invented by Christopher Sholes in 1868. The first high-speed printer was developed by Remington-Rand in 1953. It was designed to be used with the UNIVAC computer. IBM developed and marketed the first dot matrix printer in 1957.
The first computer printer designed was a mechanically driven apparatus by Charles Babbage for his difference engine in the 19th century; however, his mechanical printer design was not built until 2000.
In August 1988 Apple Computer introduced the Apple Scanner. It was their first A4 (8.5 in × 14.0 in) flatbed scanner. It was capable of a 4-bit image with 16 levels of grey in a maximum resolution of 300 dpi. The scanner could complete a full scan in 20.4 seconds.
