HP Smart app might display the “Printer status unknown” error message if your printer is idle or offline. If your printer goes into sleep or standby mode after a period of inactivity, press the power button to “wake” it.
If your USB printer is not found by the HP Smart app, make sure Windows is up to date, check for USB connection issues, and then reinstall the app. Note: An HP+ or eligible printer cannot enroll in HP Smart Advance or Instant Ink using a USB connection.

The direct linking should trigger your computer to recognize the printer and start up the software needed to complete the installation.
Make sure that both ends of the USB cable are correctly inserted into the computer and the printer. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable at both ends. Disconnect the printer and the computer and reconnect them. Try another USB port if available.

What repair needs to be done for a "50 needs repair" message on an HP Laserjet IIIP?
ANSWER : I don’t know what you mean by good toner cartridges. They haven’t been built in about 10 years, so if they are new OEMs in the box, they are guaranteed to fail. The 50 error on that printer is mostly a burned out fuser lamp. This site was sold, so as you can see, there are no more kits available.

Problem with toner
ANSWER : Was that the original problem? If not, then it’s possible you put too much grease on the heater assembly. That would act as an insulator. You just need a thin layer on the heater itself. Otherwise, you can adjust the temperatures in the control panel to apply more heat. Another thing to try is to feed from the Manual Feed tray. That will slow the printing by half and apply more heat.
