If the paper is too thick, glossy or not designed for laser printing, ghosting will most likely occur. Dust and debris inside the printer can also cause ghosting as too much dirt can interfere with the drum units, transfer units and fuser units.

Most of the time, this is an alignment issue and can be solved at the printer side. There is, on at least one model printer, something called a “Line-Feed Calibration” that might be out of whack. This might be found on the printer control panel > Setup Menu > Tools.

Ghost prints happen when the drum or fuser unit within your printer become faulty. Because a fault with this element won`t heat the particles of the toner to a high enough temperature, the marks being made on the paper are much lighter in colour and appear more faded than typical documents.

It`s the equivalent of an “Access is denied” error. If you try typing a command like “net user,” which requires elevated (administrator) access, you`re going to see the system error 5 message. This message can occur even when you believe you have administrator rights on the computer.

If the image that is printed on the left side of the paper is a ghost image of what the printer has already printed from the previous lines, then it will most likely be an issue with your fuser. Remove the fuser and inspect its cylinder surface, especially at both ends. If you see any damage, proceed for replacing it.

The best way to prevent smearing is to make sure you give the ink time to dry before picking up the copy or copies. It doesn`t take long, maybe 10-15 seconds. If that doesn`t work, try changing your printer settings for a lower quality print job. You generally have a choice, Best, Normal or Draft.

The printer is either low in toner, the density is set too low, or the Economode may be turned on. Remove the toner cartridge and shake it. This will redistribute the toner and often will temporarily solve the problem. However, this usually indicates it is time to install a new cartridge.
