When HP Smart displays the “Printer status unknown” error, the app can`t communicate with your printer. Issues with your printer connection, firmware, or driver are often responsible for this error message.
If your printer`s status displays “Printer in error state,” there may be a problem with the printer itself. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your PC by Wi-Fi or cable. Check it for low paper or ink, and be sure the cover isn`t open and the paper isn`t jammed.
If your USB printer is not found by the HP Smart app, make sure Windows is up to date, check for USB connection issues, and then reinstall the app. Note: An HP+ or eligible printer cannot enroll in HP Smart Advance or Instant Ink using a USB connection.
Restart the printer and try again. Unplug the printer from an outlet. You can plug it back in again to see if it works this time. Check if the printer is properly set up or connected to your computer`s system.
Changing the status of the printer:

In the Devices and Printers window right-click or tap and hold on your printer and select See what`s printing. Click or tap the Printer tab, then untick Use Printer Offline from the menu.

Instead of adding the printer to the existing network, you may attempt to print via Wi-Fi Direct. In case this does not work as well and you refuse to use HP Smart, it`s on you to bring the right drivers and install them manually.
Make sure that both ends of the USB cable are correctly inserted into the computer and the printer. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable at both ends. Disconnect the printer and the computer and reconnect them. Try another USB port if available.
