In computing, a parallel printer cable connects the parallel printer port on a computer to the Centronics port on a printer. These cables carry the digital signals from a computer to the printer, which transfer data for printing out on paper.
The USB to parallel printer cable allows your PC to print to most parallel printer device connected through the USB port. Just plug the USB connector of the cable into the USB port of your PC and the other end into the Centronics connector of the parallel printer.
PC Parallel Port (Centronics)

Here, each device is fitted with a 36-pin connector, and byte-wide data are sent from the PC to the printer (the peripheral) with handshaking—i.e., both the PC and the peripheral communicate with each other to control data transmission to be at a time suitable for both.

Almost all printer USB cables are universal. They usually have a USB Type-A connector on one end and a USB Type-B connector in another end. This is because most computers have a Type-A port and printers have a Type-B port.
Newer computers often don`t ship with a parallel port. If a parallel printer still is functional, however, you might still be able to use it with a new computer. To adapt parallel printer settings with a USB adapter, simply purchase a parallel-to-USB adapter cable.
A serial port uses Male ports. A parallel port uses Female ports. Modems, security cameras, device controllers use serial ports. Printers, Hard Drives, CD drives use parallel ports.
USB allows data to travel on the average of ten times the speed of the normal parallel port. It is also faster than a serial port. The average serial port transfer rate is 150 kbps; the USB port is up to 12 Mbps. USB 2 is forty times faster, with a maximum transfer rate of 480 Mbps.
This allows multiple devices to be connected to one USB port on your PC. With a parallel cable, only one device can be plugged into the port. Another good advantage of USB cables is that they can be used to charge gadgets like mobile phones and tablets, which is an ability that parallel cables lack.
Although the vast majority of consumer printers rely on USB or WiFi, some older models still use the largely obsolete parallel port. In this article, you will learn why it is called a parallel port, what it does and exactly how it operates. Jeff Tyson “How Parallel Ports Work” 1 May 2023.
When a peripheral device is attached via USB, the host computer will detect what kind of device it is and automatically load a driver that allows the device to function. Data is transferred between the two devices in small amounts known as `packets`.
You can connect multiple printers to your computer`s USB port to print business documents and images. A USB switch allows you to connect a number of devices to one USB port on your computer.
Yes, you can connect the printer to a computer with a USB cable and a wireless network.
In order to use multiple Printers on the same PC you must change the USB serial number identifier of one of the printers so that the computer recognizes the printers as separate devices.
Characteristics of Parallel Ports

Transfer multiple bits at a time. It can send/receive 8 bits/1 byte at a time. It contains 25 female pins. Connects devices like printer, external HDD, scanners, etc. to the computer. The most common parallel port is the printer port.

Overall, the parallel mode offers the advantage of faster loading of the registers, but with the disadvantage of requiring more interconnect traces. The serial mode offers simplicity, but with less speed.
Parallel Port: Unlike serial port, a parallel port can move a set of 8 bits at a time on eight different wires. That`s why it is faster in comparison to the serial communication. Unlike serial port, It uses a 25 pin connector that is called DB-25 connector.
A data cable will usually have four wires, one positive and one negative, one for receiving data and one for transferring data. A charging cable, however, will typically only have two wires, the positive and negative ones but none of the data wires.
If you were to open up a USB cable, you would notice 4 different USB wire colours: white and green, which carry data, and red and black, which are used for power. Red carries 5 volts and acts as the positive wire, while black is the negative wire, otherwise known as the ground wire.
Unlike a parallel port, which can connect one device at a time, USB ports can support additional devices with an external USB hub. A USB hub is plugged into a USB port on the computer and provides additional USB ports.
The reason modern devices use serial transmission is the following: You cannot increase the signal frequency for a parallel transmission without limit, because, by design, all signals from the transmitter need to arrive at the receiver at the same time.
Parallel interfaces are actually slower than serial due to data skew, wider timing windows to accept all the parallel bits. More complicated cables and connectors are required so serial hardware can be simpler and cheaper.
The parallel port cables that are used to connect the printer to the computer often contain a 36-pin “Centronics 36” connector. Data could be transmitted at a maximum speed of 150 kbps using the original parallel port standard. A DB25 parallel port is shown in the image below.
This could be through USB for wired printers or through a WiFi network for wireless printers.
