Check that you have removed all protective strips, plastic coverings and tabs from your ink cartridge. Check and make sure you use the correct ink cartridge for the corresponding Brother printer. Check and make sure that there is no dirt or smudge in the metal contacts of your ink cartridge or printer.
Once a cartridge has been used until it is empty the chip records that the cartridge has no remaining ink or toner and so when it`s refilled, the chip needs to be reset. If this isn`t done, then the printer will fail to recognise the cartridge.
The message “Ink Low” will be displayed on the machine`s display of the Brother machine if the amount of remaining ink in one or more of the ink tanks is low. This error message may appear if the ink dot counter is incorrect even if a lot of ink remains.
Hold each ink cartridge as it would be installed in the machine and locate the black Ink Sensor in the Ink Sensor Window at the top of the cartridge.
Just above the circuit board on most printer cartridges, you`ll find a small button. You`ve seen these tiny buttons before on cell phones, phone chargers, etc. This is your reset button, and the only way to get in there is either with a paper clip or the tip of a pen (which will leave a tiny ink smudge on the button).
Your printer may not recognize the new ink cartridge, or the ink counter may read it as empty. Many printers have a cartridge reset feature that forces the machine to recognize the cartridge as new.
Use only a cotton swab, or a dry lint-free cloth. We recommend placing the toner cartridge and drum unit assemblies on a clean, flat surface with disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
This error occurs due to the chip on your cartridge still reporting a low or empty ink level from its previous use. The chip itself cannot be reset, so when the cartridge is refilled and then installed into a new machine it will still register as empty.
The sensor on the cartridge is to let you know that the cartridge is firmly and correctly installed in the printhead. then it will alert you to the fact that it is getting low and it is time to reorder that color. Answered by Skull1063 5 years ago.
The chip is programmed to automatically reset when the cartridge reads empty in the printer, is removed, refilled with ink, and reinstalled. Upon reinserting the cartridge, the ink level will be reset to full. This style chip can NOT be manually reset.
Brother printer error

The Drum Error is another common error experienced by users of Brother printers. Both the error message “Drum Error” and “Clean Drum Unit” mean that the drum unit of your machine is dirty. The dirt may be caused by dust or by loose toner.

To fix toner streaks, first, print several blank pages to see if it fixes the print quality. Next, try cleaning the internal components of the printer such as the laser scanner/mirrors. If this doesn`t work, re-install the toner cartridge.
The message Replace Toner appears on the display if any one of the following occurs: – The toner cartridge is at its end of life and needs to be replaced. – The developer roller has reached its upper limit of rotations.
This is due to several factors such as poor quality ink being used, tanks not being mixed often enough causing sediment to gather at the bottom of the tanks or not being used often enough. All of these factors can cause the black ink or the colours not to print.
The reason may be quite simple – your cartridge is dry or clogged. Still, adding fresh ink may not resolve the situation. Try to wipe the cartridge with a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Please avoid touching the metal parts of these cartridges and the chip not to damage their electrical contacts.

Power off the printer and unplug its power cord from the wall– wait 10-15 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and power on the printer. Insert the next incompatible ink cartridge, one at a time. Make sure to insert the incompatible ink cartridges, one at a time, first.

run with empty ink cartridge
ANSWER : The only way is to buy a chip resetter and reset the chip on the cartridge. You can find them online for about $5. You just hold it against the cartridge until the light turns green. You do run the risk of damaging the printhead due to overheating because of no ink in it.

incompatible ink cartridge message
ANSWER : Pretty much nothing else you can do except try another new cartridge. I had 2 identical HP printers once in the shop. One of them didn’t like one of the cartridges. I swapped it over with the other printers cartridge and it was happy. So was the other printer. Swapped the cartridges back and it didn’t like it again. How do you explain that? You don’t.

cannot recognise new ink cartridge
ANSWER : I followed all the online hints I could find and none worked. So I got to looking at the cartridge ink window and noticed it had a little float inside that was stuck to the bottom. I gently turned it upside down several times to let the float move to the top of the ink tank. It took several try’s but it eventually stayed up about half way. I installed the cartridge again, making sure cartridge clicked in and printer began working.
