An image drum is a vital part of a laser printer that is responsible for transferring the toner and image or text to paper. It has several different names, it`s also called the imaging unit, drum unit or photoreceptor drum.
You might need to replace the imaging drum for the following reasons: An `Imaging Drum Low` or an `Imaging Drum Very Low` message displays on the printer control panel. The actual imaging drum life remaining might vary. Repeated defects appear on printouts at the following intervals: 26 mm (1 in)
Toner is the powder ink that latches on to the paper to create text and images. It is stored in the toner cartridge. An image drum is the unit that copies the text and images from the computer and then transfers them to the paper, along with the toner.
Also known as Photoconductor-Unit (PCU) or Imaging-Unit (IU), the design of the drum-unit vary depending on the brand and model of the device. Recent models in laserprinter and MFPs make use of toner cartridges with built-in drum-units.
There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 12,000 pages.
Cover the removed Imaging Unit with a cloth to keep from being affected by light. Align to the Print Head Glass, then insert the Laser Lens Cleaning Tool inside with the sponge side facing downward, then move it back and forth several times. Repeat this operation for all the Print Head Glass.
When a imaging unit has reached the end of life, the machine will stop printing. To prevent damage to the toner cartridge, do not expose it to light for more than a few minutes. Cover it with a piece of paper, if necessary.
Separate drum units last quite a bit longer than a toner cartridge and typically should be replaced after the use of 3-4 toners. Your printer should inform you when it`s time to replace the drum, but you can usually tell your drum is on it`s last legs if you start to see black spots or lines across the page.
The Brother machine will display a `Replace Drum` or `Drum Stop` message when the machine has printed approximately 15,000 pages. The drums should be replaced as a set in order to maintain print quality. Unlike the toner cartridges, the drum change is not automatically detected by the machine when they are replaced.
The imaging unit is the key component of the printer that creates images on paper. A properly functioning imaging unit can deliver the excellent image quality and smear-free printouts. This web page provides instructions for installing, cleaning, replacing, and resetting the imaging unit for Lexmark printers.
An image drum is a critical component of a laser printer that transfers toner and image or text to paper. It`s also known as the image unit, drum unit, or photoreceptor drum, among other things.
The first, direct-imaging, is (usually) a waterless printing process based on imaging the printing plates while they are on press. Plates are burned by laser within the press itself. The job is printed, and the plates are then rolled up into a waste canister so new plates can be imaged—all while on press.

Digital images are usually measured by counting the number of individual pixels (dots of image data) in an inch. Thus he resolution of digital images is often given in “Dots per Inch”(DPI) or, more precisely, “Pixels per Inch” (PPI).

Minolta Pageworks L printer
ANSWER : I’m not familiar with that model. I do have to say that 8 years in storage will have detrimental results. I have never seen any printer request a transfer roller change. They do come as part of maintenance kits in HP series printers. Transfer rollers really don’t wear out. Worst that happens is they get toner on them. Their function is to charge the back of the paper and pull the toner down on it. That being said, you probably will have a host of other issues. Any drum wiper blade will have deteriorated necessitating replacement of the drums. The fuser assy. will probably have suffered damage to the pressure roller from sitting in the same position without rotation for 8 years. Depending on storage conditions, the toners might have suffered as well. In my opinion, it will cost you more to fix it than replace it. Test print procedure is Chapter 3, item 5 in the user manual http://printer.konicaminolta.net/drivers/manuals/pageworks/cpw.pdf

changed fusing unit, machine won't power (won't come back on)
ANSWER : You should always change fusers with the power plug pulled. You should check and make sure both ends of the power plug are firmly in. I’ve been on calls where I have found either end not connected. Waste of my time.

Toner cartridge full, printer displays: "empty needs replacing"
ANSWER : I once went to a customer who had a similar issue. They had installed new cartridges and judging from the box, they looked OEM. Strange thing was they felt empty when lifted and they were missing the chip on the outside that tells the printer it is installed and keeps track of how many copies were printed with that cartridge. The printer has no other way of knowing if the cartridge is full or empty.
