The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw is a variant of the HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dw but with a scanner added. The M479fdw also has a higher color page yield and a better display screen. However, the M454dw has a better black page yield, and it`s a little faster at printing black and white documents.

First, check your printer settings on the file or picture your trying to print. If your page is setup to print in “grayscale” it will only print in black and white. Change the setting to “default” so it will print in color. If your settings look good from the start, the cartridge may just need to be primed.

Your printer should have been packaged with a USB cable regardless of whether it is a wireless or wired printer. Plug the cable into your printer and your computer`s USB port. The direct linking should trigger your computer to recognize the printer and start up the software needed to complete the installation.

Also, check the color printing options under the printing preferences window. Go to Control Panel – Devices and Printers. Right-click on your printer and select “Printing Preferences”. Now navigate through the menu and make sure the grayscale printing option is disabled.

Make sure the Black/Grayscale or Grayscale setting is not selected in your printer software. Run a nozzle check to see if any of the print head nozzles are clogged. Then clean the print head, if necessary. The ink cartridges may be old or low on ink, and you may need to replace them.

Press your printer`s Setup button. Go to System Setup. Choose Print Quality and then Calibrate Color. Choose Calibrate Now and press OK.

Click Start, go to Devices and Printers, right-click on the icon for your printer and select “Printing preferences.” There should be a “Color” tab. Look at that and make sure that “Print in Grayscale” is not selected. Click OK. The figure below is from a different HP printer, buy yours should be similar.

If the Color option is missing, click the Advanced. In the Advanced Options window, set Off for Print in Grayscale under the Document Options section. Then enable the color printing option in the printer settings. On HP printers, you also need to check one more option in the driver settings.
