Note: If you regularly print in black and white, but find that color ink is also used, your printer model uses a mix of black and color inks to decrease grain. Additionally, some ink is used from all cartridges to perform periodic servicing that prevents clogs and other print quality issues.
Printers that use two cartridges (one black, one tri-color) can print if one cartridge is empty. To continue printing, remove the empty cartridge from the printer. If a Single-cartridge mode message displays, select OK. If you are using the black cartridge, prints are in black and white (grayscale).

Ink cartridges can dry out over time. If they are sitting in your machine for an extended period, they will eventually dry up and become unusable. The simplest way to combat this problem is by printing more frequently or running regular cleans and ink tests to ensure the nozzles remain clean.
If you print in mostly black, your black cartridge will naturally run out faster than the color cartridges. However, some printers will pull a bit of ink from the color cartridges when you are printing solely in black, just to keep them primed for future use.
As long as your printer also has a colour cartridge, all the colours from the colour cartridge will print together to make … BLACK.
Improve printer performance by selecting the optimum paper type for the tray. You can select from the following paper types: Tray 1. [Thin Paper], [Thick Paper 1], [Thick Paper 2], [Plain Paper], [Recycled Paper], [Color Paper], [Preprinted], [Prepunched], [Letterhead], [Bond Paper], [Cardstock], [Label Paper]
To specify a tray within MS Word the user must: Click File and then Print. In the Print Dialogue click Page Setup. In the Page Setup window click on the Paper tab.
The answer is yes, your printer uses a bit of all colors (black, cyan, magenta, yellow) every time it prints. According to HP Support, “[our] printers are designed in such a way that it also uses color inks while printing in black to form a perfect black. This is called as K-fortification in printer terms.
Also known as black and white printers, monochrome printers use only black ink or toner. Monochrome printers can not print in color.
An original printer cartridge that comes with your printer is likely closer to 24 months, while a compatible cartridge may come closer to 36 months. Check the expiration dates so you can prioritize use of cartridges with earlier dates.
How long do printer ink cartridges or toner last? If your wondering how long ink cartridges or toner lasts before they expire or ink dries up, ink cartridges are manufactured with a 2-year expiry date. When you get close to two years, the ink sponge inside the cartridge can start to dry up.
First, check your printer settings on the file or picture your trying to print. If your page is setup to print in “grayscale” it will only print in black and white. Change the setting to “default” so it will print in color. If your settings look good from the start, the cartridge may just need to be primed.
If you feel that the ink cartridges run out very quickly every time you replace the ink, it`s possible you are printing high density documents frequently. The ink consumption varies very much on print density.
If your printouts have incorrect colors, try these solutions: Make sure the paper type setting matches the paper you loaded. Make sure the Black/Grayscale or Grayscale setting is not selected in your printer software. Run a nozzle check to see if any of the print head nozzles are clogged.
On the other hand, when you print in monochrome (black and white), your printer only requires two colors. It uses the black ink or toner cartridge to produce both black and gray tones, and leaves blank spaces on the paper to create white.
Many printer models require at least some ink in all cartridges to keep printing. However, if you`re lucky, your software may allow you to squeeze out the rest of your color ink without using black.
Dye-based inks take a soluble colourant or dye and dissolve it in the liquid to create their colouration, whereas pigment ink works via microscopic solid colorant particles suspended evenly in the liquid carrier as a very fine powder, without ever becoming part of it.
The difference between ink and toner
Ink cartridges are designed for most HP InkJet printers, while toner cartridges are used for HP LaserJet printing. Ink is a liquid, but toner is actually a powder that gives laser printers great precision and control at higher speeds.
When color ink is expended and black ink still remains, you can continue printing for a short time using only black ink. However, you should replace the expended ink cartridge(s) as soon as possible.
Using a generic or refilled ink cartridge won`t automatically void your warranty, but it`s important to note that any damage caused specifically from using a non-HP ink product won`t be covered by the warranty for your HP printer.
A 3-in-1 allows you to print school papers, copy recipes from cookbooks, and scan documents; while a 4-in-1 also lets you fax. Consider a time-saving supertank printer if you want to print more pages with fewer cartridge changes.
3. Dots are typically caused by foreign material inside the machine (for example, paper dust, glue from labels or envelopes, paper clips, staples) sticking to or damaging the surface of the drum. Toner builds up on or sticks to these areas on the drum and creates black dots on the printed page.
Right-click your product, and then select Printing Preferences. From the Printing Preferences menu, select Paper/Quality. From the Paper Source drop-down menu, select Tray 2.

HP Laserjet 2200, Tray 2 Pickup Problem, Gears Clicking
ANSWER : Definitely not a solenoid problem. I’ve worked on tens of thousands of printers and never replaced a single solenoid. You probably knocked something loose when you installed the pickup roller. Maybe something to do with the gear on the end of the pickup roller shaft. You’ll need to take the gear assembly off to be able to see it.

What repair needs to be done for a "50 needs repair" message on an HP Laserjet IIIP?
ANSWER : I don’t know what you mean by good toner cartridges. They haven’t been built in about 10 years, so if they are new OEMs in the box, they are guaranteed to fail. The 50 error on that printer is mostly a burned out fuser lamp. This site was sold, so as you can see, there are no more kits available.
