HP LaserJet printers use a laser beam and one (or more) toner cartridge to print directly without ink. Using laser toner cartridges, the typical laser printer can produce precision prints more quickly than ink. Unlike a laser printer, inkjet printing relies on liquid ink cartridges.

Connect the printer to the computer either using a USB cable, parallel port cable, or SCSI cable and then connect the power plug to a power outlet. After connecting the printer to the computer, it can be turned on using the power button on the front of the printer.

Your printer should have been packaged with a USB cable regardless of whether it is a wireless or wired printer. Plug the cable into your printer and your computer`s USB port. The direct linking should trigger your computer to recognize the printer and start up the software needed to complete the installation.

Simply plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC, and turn the printer on. On the taskbar, select the Search icon, type Printers in the search bar, and then select Printers & scanners from the search results to open the Printers & scanners system setting.

Like a photocopier, laser printers read the electronic data from your computer and beam this information onto a drum inside the printer, which builds up a pattern of static electricity. This attracts a dry powder called toner onto the paper which is then fused using heated rollers.

While ink is standard in most conventional inkjet home printers, laser printers depend on toner and lasers for their output.

How a laser printer works. They work by using a heated wire to positively charge a drum, which is then passed over by a laser that reverses the charge in the areas that it hits. The now-negatively charged areas of the drum represents the image or text that is to be printed.

Laser printers are still often connected directly to a single PC, but today many are linked to local area networks (LAN), supporting workgroups or entire departments. In some cases, a laser printer is used as a multifunction peripheral with printing, scanning, photocopying and fax capabilities.

In Windows, search for and open Add a printer or scanner . Click Add a printer or scanner, and then wait for Windows to locate available printers. If your printer is found, click it, and then click Add device to complete the driver installation. If your printer is not found, continue with these steps.
