Click the Properties button. The Properties dialog box opens. Check the options on the property tabs to make sure that the appropriate color options are selected. If there is a checkmark in the box by Print in Grayscale, click in the box to remove the checkmark, and then click OK.

Set Default to Black and White
Right-click on the printer and click Printer properties. In the printer properties window, go to General tab and click Preferences button. In the Printing Preferences window, go to Paper/Output tab. Select Black and White.
If the ink level is sufficient, but the printer still does not print black ink, you may need to run a cleaning cycle. A cleaning cycle is a process that cleans the printer heads and removes any clogged or dried ink.
Choose File > Print. Select Print Color As Black.
First, check your printer settings on the file or picture your trying to print. If your page is setup to print in “grayscale” it will only print in black and white. Change the setting to “default” so it will print in color. If your settings look good from the start, the cartridge may just need to be primed.
Check the toner darkness settings.
Sometimes light print can be remedied by simply changing the toner darkness setting in the printer. To change the setting, go to MENU>>SETTINGS>>QUALITY MENU>>TONER DARKNESS. Increase the darkness and send a test print to see if that fixes the issue.
You can visually inspect the remaining cartridge levels on your printer. If they are full but you still cannot print properly, check the cartridge`s expiry date. Expired ink cartridges often dry up which causes problems in the print results.
Click the Paper/Quality tab, and then locate the Quality Settings area. If the entire page is too dark, select the EconoMode setting. If the entire page is too light, make sure you are using the correct setting for the print job. If you a printing photos, select the Photo option.
What is the blackest black in CMYK? The blackest black is C-75 M-68 Y-67 K-90. This can be accomplished by simply dragging the color picker all the way to the bottom left, but you can also enter the values manually to ensure that you`re using a true black.
Rich black uses CMYK values of: C = 60, M = 60, Y = 60, K = 100.

Monochrome printing only requires a small amount of black ink, while grayscale printing mixes black and color ink or toner to make up different shades of gray.

ANSWER : Try this test. Put a page into the manual feeder and do that same test. When the end of the page is just about to enter the printer, open the lid. Take out the toner cartridge and pull back the shutter. Look at the image and see if it is black. The explanation is that there is high voltage going to both the toner cartridge and the charge transfer roller below it. If the image on the drum is black, then the fault is at the transfer roller not getting enough high voltage. The transfer roller pulls the image off of the drum and down onto the paper. It would not be a laser scanner problem as any issue with it would not result in an overall gray image, but combination of gray and black. It will probably turn out to be a bad HV power supply, which will need replacement. I’ve never seen this particular problem on this model.

ANSWER : Definitely not a solenoid problem. I’ve worked on tens of thousands of printers and never replaced a single solenoid. You probably knocked something loose when you installed the pickup roller. Maybe something to do with the gear on the end of the pickup roller shaft. You’ll need to take the gear assembly off to be able to see it.
