HP Smart app might display the “Printer status unknown” error message if your printer is idle or offline. If your printer goes into sleep or standby mode after a period of inactivity, press the power button to “wake” it.

On your computer or mobile device, open the Wi-Fi or wireless settings to view the list of available wireless networks. Select your Wi-Fi Direct printer name from the list of networks, and then enter the password to connect to the printer. In a web browser, type 192.168. 223.1 into the address bar.

It won`t help with paper jams or leaking ink, but it can solve problems with communication between your printer and computer.
