An image drum is a critical component of a laser printer that transfers toner and image or text to paper. It`s also known as the image unit, drum unit, or photoreceptor drum, among other things.
For cleaning, HP recommends using HP Equipment Cleaning Wipes, but you can use an HP-approved lint-free wipe and deionized or distilled water. Note: If dark spots appear on back side of prints, clean drum screen. Note: If minilab prints more than 2000 prints each day, clean drum screen up to twice daily.
You`ll know the drum is dirty if you notice that the print quality has become blurry and features blank spots or oddly-colored spots despite having full toner cartridges. Horizontal lines across the printout when the paper passes over a dirty area are another sign that it`s time for some maintenance.
A laser writes over the drum and leaves a negative charge where the text and/or images will appear. Next, the paper is fed by the pickup rollers and receives a stronger negative charge that pulls the toner from the cartridge to the drum onto the paper.
An image drum is the image carrier or imaging device used in some non-impact methods of printing. The image being printed is created on the surface of the image drum, which then transfers toner onto the substrate in the correct position to form the final printed image.
Separate drum units last quite a bit longer than a toner cartridge and typically should be replaced after the use of 3-4 toners. Your printer should inform you when it`s time to replace the drum, but you can usually tell your drum is on it`s last legs if you start to see black spots or lines across the page.

The toner cartridge contains several components including the color pigment used to create letters and images. The imaging drum is the unit that transfers the toner to paper by following the principles of electrophotography. Not all laser printer models require both toner cartridge and imaging drums.
Laser printer drum surfaces are first charged to a high voltage – typically about minus 600 volts. In photocopiers and older laser printers the charge device may be a “corotron” and the voltage used is much higher – more like 6,000 volts.
The drum uses static electricity to attract powdered toner to the drums cylinder. The drum rolls the toner onto the paper in the form of your print. The toner is melted & pressed onto the paper by heat from a fuser as it passes through its rollers. Your print comes out of the printer.
Here`s how it works: When you hit the cymbal pad anywhere, the piezo sensor in the bow sends a little voltage spike down the cable to the module, and the module plays the sound you`ve programmed it to play when the cymbal pad is hit.
To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the surface of the drum unit, only the wheel on the end.
A drum unit is a green metal cylinder or tube that carries a static electrical charge that attracts the toner powder from the toner cartridge and applies it to the paper as it passes through the printer. Therefore, you will always find that the drum unit is located very close to or even attached to the toner cartridge.
Drum heads wear out!
Drummers who practice a lot should probably change heads once every six months. Drummers who own their own drums can probably change the heads without any problem, but if it is the first time, it might be a good idea to have someone at the drum shop, or an experienced drummer, teach you.
As the imaging drum rotates, it applies an electrostatic charge to the toner particles on its surface. The transfer roller, which is usually a thin, cylindrical roller made of rubber or foam, applies pressure and a positive charge to the back of the paper as it moves through the printer or copier.
Found within any laser printer, a toner drum is a component which transfers the toner powder stored within the cartridge onto the paper. It comes in the form of an electrically-charged cylinder. The printer will take toner powder from the cartridges and apply it on to the drum unit`s roller.
Buying extra drums for your office laser printer saves money and time, but the components do have a shelf life. Shelf life is a period of time the components can be stored and still be suitable for use. A laser printer drum`s shelf life is approximately two years if the drum is still in its protective bag.
Do Drum Units Expire? Fortunately, just like laser toners, drum units don`t expire, so you can safely keep extra units on hand if printing is a core part of your business or routine. The only consumable that expires is ink, which is printed on the cartridge itself.

Reset HP Color Laserjet 4700 transfer kit
ANSWER : How about the situation when resistor does not reset the transfer belt count and even new transfer belt out of the box is not doing it. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem? I did reset transfer belts and fusing units on several HL 4700 printers with no problem but also I came across few which were not possible to reset even with oryginal parts.

My 2550n Color LaserJet does not want to print in color
ANSWER : That model had issues with the carousel solenoid sticking. That might explain why it works after you let it sit for 10 minutes. The solenoid gets hotter with use which causes the deteriorated foam on it to become sticky and hold down the release plate instead of letting it go. This allows the carousel to spin when it is supposed to stop for each color. The solenoid is located on the right side of the printer. If you open the lid, it is just behind the opening at the top right. You need to remove the top of the printer and scrape off the goo on top of the solenoid body. I put a piece of thin sticky backed felt to replace it. Other people use electrical tape.

ANSWER : What about the engine test? To do that, drop down the front tray. Feel around on the left side at the top and you’ll feel a little plastic dongle. If you lift up on that it will initiate an engine test page. That will be a page containing lines of each color.
