HP printer won`t recognize new ink cartridge:
Take the old cartridge out and put the previous one in again. Restart the machine and it should now work. If not, you may have to clean the cartridge. Some of HP`s newer model laser printers have a setting that only allows original HP toners to be used in the printer.
Ensure Proper Ink Cartridge Insertion
There is a possibility that it didn`t properly click into the designated slot. If this is the case, you should lift the cover and double-check in order to verify that the cartridge is clicked into place. Otherwise, it would not be possible for the printer to detect it.
How can I override my HP ink cartridge? Remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge slots 2-3 times until it firmly sits in place to override the HP ink cartridge error. After doing this, turn off the printer and remove all the cartridges.
Just above the circuit board on most printer cartridges, you`ll find a small button. You`ve seen these tiny buttons before on cell phones, phone chargers, etc. This is your reset button, and the only way to get in there is either with a paper clip or the tip of a pen (which will leave a tiny ink smudge on the button).
There are chips inside the original cartridges to record how many pages were printed and they cannot be reset. As a result the printer reads the chips and tells you that the cartridges are empty, even though they are not. This is why you are getting the “ink low” message even though the ink tank is at full capacity.
The “Incompatible Cartridge” message may signal you that the cartridge was placed in the wrong slot. In case you get such an error, make sure the cartridge model numbers match your printer model and your country/region. After that, check if they are installed correctly in the corresponding slots.
Since most printer cartridges are outfitted with a unique chip that helps keep track of ink levels, the printer is able to tell that the wrong cartridge is installed and it won`t print if the cartridges are mixed up.

ANSWER : HP Color Laser Jet 1600 – Thanks for all the above information. Even though the 1600 is a different printer, I followed the above: “…go to “System Configuration”; then to “Print Quality”; I then get a choice of “Replace Supplies” and then “Overide Out”…” Selecting “Overide Out” got my 1600 back to printing, although I did have do perform the steps TWICE before it seemed to take affect. Not sure what was going on, but I’m happy that people put the information out there for the rest of us to have.
