Toner Sensor
These sensors are covered with toner when the cartridge is full, then become exposed over time as you print pages and the toner level declines. When the cartridge reaches a level set by the manufacturer, your low-toner indicator will light.
A cartridge deemed “empty” by the printer has only slightly less toner, about 15%. That 5% range seems to represent the entire capacity of the cartridge. But what exactly is inside? Whereas inkjet printers spray small drops of liquid ink onto paper, laser printers operate using plastics, electricity, and heat.
Printer toner is a very fine powder composed mainly of plastic polymer and coloring agents. Toner powder is electrostatically charged inside the printer and fused to the paper as it passes over a metal drum in the printer. Black toner is typically used in laser printing.
Benefits of using toner and laser printers
Furthermore, toner does not dry up in the same way that printer inks do if you don`t print so often, saving time and money.
You`ll be able to keep printing until the black toner runs out. When the black toner runs out, you won`t be able to print until you replace it.
Although a waste toner bottle is extremely important to keep your printers performing at their very best, modern laser printers do not come with this component.
When you send a print job from your computer, the computer tells the printer where to deposit the ink or toner. If there isn`t enough ink or toner left in the cartridge, the printer will display a low or empty sign to indicate you should replace the cartridge soon.
Check ink or toner levels from the printer control panel
Many HP printers display ink and toner levels on the control panel. Look for an Ink drop icon ( or ), a Cartridge icon , an Ink Levels menu, or a Toner Level indicator.
A message appears on the printer touch screen when the waste toner container is full. If you continue copying or printing without replacing the waste toner container, the printer stops after copying or printing approximately 18,000 sheets. Replace the Waste Toner Container.

When “Toner Low” is displayed, prepare a new toner cartridge. If you do not have a new toner cartridge at hand and need printing before obtaining it, you can continue printing about 20 pages(*1) by opening and closing the front cover or the output tray. Print quality is not guaranteed.
Each printer uses an optical sensor in which shines a light through a prism at the bottom of the ink well. Once ink levels fall to a predetermined level, a beam of light bounces towards a low-ink sensor, which again triggers an on-screen message that tells you to replace the cartridge.
