A degraded drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed page even if you just inserted a new printer toner. While a broken drum unit won`t break your printer, it will just fail to stop printing at a certain point.
The “Scanner error 2” is a common problem on the HP Color LaserJet 2820 and 2840 series printers. The general advice is to turn the printer on and off, and see if the error resolves. If the “Scanner error 2” keeps coming back, you should replace the flatbed scanner assembly.

Recommended action. Turn the printer off, wait 15 seconds and turn the printer back on (using the power switch located on the back of the printer). The error code should not appear again.

The drum unit may need replacing if you notice the printer producing blurry, low-quality images. Black or colored toner spots on printouts also indicates a failing drum unit. In some cases, horizontal lines may develop across the printout every time the paper passes the failing part of the drum.
The most obvious is most common on laser color printers and can be detected by a flashing message on the printer display screen. Other signs of a bad printer drum include printing blank pages, printing gray pages and strange sounds coming from the printer as it prints.
Shelf life is a period of time the components can be stored and still be suitable for use. A laser printer drum`s shelf life is approximately two years if the drum is still in its protective bag. Leave your printer`s drum in its protective bag until you`re ready to install the component.
Hold the cartridge over a garbage can and hold open the cover on the black tube that extends from the green plastic part of the cartridge. Turn the gear wheel to the left, to loosen the gear and empty the Toner from the Drum. Insert the Drum Cartridge back in the machine.
