A degraded drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed page even if you just inserted a new printer toner. While a broken drum unit won`t break your printer, it will just fail to stop printing at a certain point.
The “Scanner error 2” is a common problem on the HP Color LaserJet 2820 and 2840 series printers. The general advice is to turn the printer on and off, and see if the error resolves. If the “Scanner error 2” keeps coming back, you should replace the flatbed scanner assembly.
An image drum is a vital part of a laser printer that is responsible for transferring the toner and image or text to paper. It has several different names, it`s also called the imaging unit, drum unit or photoreceptor drum.
If your machine continues to display “Replace Drum” after installing a new drum, the drum counter may not have reset properly. Whenever you replace the drum unit, the drum counter needs to be reset.
Why do I need a drum? Without a drum unit, the toner powder in the cartridge cannot be transferred onto the page. The two parts work together to create a print! You can`t have one without the other and expect the printer to work properly.
Print quality may deteriorate if you touch or damage the photosensitive drum inside the drum cartridge. Be sure not to touch or open the drum protective shutter (A). Be careful not to hold or touch areas that are not specified in this procedure, such as the electrical contacts (B).
Recommended action. Turn the printer off, wait 15 seconds and turn the printer back on (using the power switch located on the back of the printer). The error code should not appear again.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor on your Windows computer to help diagnose and fix printing and scanning issues. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then follow the prompts to install and open the tool.
The drum unit may need replacing if you notice the printer producing blurry, low-quality images. Black or colored toner spots on printouts also indicates a failing drum unit. In some cases, horizontal lines may develop across the printout every time the paper passes the failing part of the drum.
The most obvious is most common on laser color printers and can be detected by a flashing message on the printer display screen. Other signs of a bad printer drum include printing blank pages, printing gray pages and strange sounds coming from the printer as it prints.
Shelf life is a period of time the components can be stored and still be suitable for use. A laser printer drum`s shelf life is approximately two years if the drum is still in its protective bag. Leave your printer`s drum in its protective bag until you`re ready to install the component.
Hold the cartridge over a garbage can and hold open the cover on the black tube that extends from the green plastic part of the cartridge. Turn the gear wheel to the left, to loosen the gear and empty the Toner from the Drum. Insert the Drum Cartridge back in the machine.
