Smears that appear in addition to otherwise well-formed output may signal toner contamination inside your LaserJet, either from a leaky cartridge or from improperly fused sheets that leave toner residue behind. Smears at the edge of the sheet that enters the printer first point to dirty paper guides.
The streaks or lines might be caused due to low ink levels in one or both ink cartridges. Check the ink levels using the HP Toolbox to determine if the ink cartridges are low on ink and need to be replaced.
A typical ink cartridge will yield 250 to 300 pages depending on the color density of the prints. The yield of a typical toner cartridge in a laser printer is between 2,500 and 3,000 pages. Some larger laser printers can even have toners that will yield up to 30,000 pages!
Smears and smudges on the paper can be caused by dirt, dust, or toner accumulated on the rollers or transfer belt as it passes through the paper. Cleaning your printer, particularly the rollers, is one of the options for removing black markings from paper.
Streaking is usually caused by a worn out drum unit or spent toner cartridge. Drum units are a consumable and only need to be replaced after the use of 3 or 4 toners. Not all printers use a separate toner and drum unit.
A printer printing lines on the page are normally caused by a blocked, dirty, or damaged print head. Blocked ink cartridge nozzles, or not removing protective seals correctly when you installed a new ink cartridge can also cause missing lines of print.
For cleaning, HP recommends using HP Equipment Cleaning Wipes, but you can use an HP-approved lint-free wipe and deionized or distilled water. Note: If dark spots appear on back side of prints, clean drum screen. Note: If minilab prints more than 2000 prints each day, clean drum screen up to twice daily.
Color Laser Printer or Black & White Laser Printer
As print quality goes down over time, this will be a reason to replace the color printer. We find a black and white printer can sometimes last 10 years or more and most color laser printers are replaced every 3 to 5 years.
Laser printers can`t handle a variety of paper or printing materials like inkjets. Anything heat-sensitive cannot be run through them. Home laser printers can handle simple graphics, but smooth photographs are a challenge. If you want to print photos, go for inkjet.
Laser Printers
Once they`re ejected, pages from a properly functioning laser printer can`t smear. A laser printer uses a solid material, called toner, to form the page images.
In the context of laminating, ink smear is the degradation of print quality, due to the movement of ink.
To keep your printer`s ink from smearing on your labels, be sure to always use inkjet products with an inkjet printer and laser products with a laser printer. Some of our glossy products take a minute to dry, so please wait before you touch the printing.
This can be caused by debris or contamination on the drum, the transfer corotron, the device not positioned properly on a solid flat, level surface, or by using old or damp paper.
Dirt, dust, or toner accumulated on the rollers or transfer belt can cause smears and smudges on the paper as it goes through the paper. Cleaning your printer, especially its rollers, is one of the possible solutions to fix black marks on paper.
