I was using the auto feed to scan a document, but it got stuck. I opened up the ADF and was able to pull out the document. Now, everything I scan or copy has thick black lines from top to bottom all across the page. HELP!!!

Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
If you are using the ADF, all pages are scanned with the scanner stationary on the left side. There is a small glass above the scanner and if there is anything on it, dust, whiteout, ink etc. it will interpret it as a line. First solution would be to clean the glass with window cleaner and a paper towel. If that doesn’t solve it, then scan the page on the flat glass and see if the problem continues.

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced technical support :

HP has determined that 99% of all lines and streaks on copies made by feeding the original documents through the ADF are caused by debris on the ADF glass. Debris can include dust, paper or toner dust, residue from sticky note adhesive, correction fluid or tape, ink, fingerprints, and more.
These types of lines are typically caused by dirt or white out (correction fluid) on the scanner unit, or one of the corona wires for printing is dirty. This problem is usually resolved by cleaning the scanner glass, scanner glass strip and white plastic bar with a soft lint-free cloth, or cleaning the corona wires.
Streaks happen not from dust on the larger glass scanning surface, but on the smaller scanner that reads your documents as they are fed into the copier. When dust gets on the thin slit of glass that scans copies as your original document slides through, a single dust particle can cause a huge line streak.
You can use the redaction tool to mark the entire area and then apply the redaction, thereby removing the line.
White lines will typically start appearing on your print outs due to a clogged up printer head. Your first port of call when solving this problem is to run the cleaning program on your printer, which should be accessible through its settings menu.
Streaks on your print jobs are a result of your copier glass being dirty. “Dirt” is created by fingerprints, dust, and other forms collected through usage. Often this will be detected by your device before streaks begin to appear, and a display will read that the glass needs to be cleaned.
This happens when the rollers or the transfer belt inside the printer get dirty or covered in excess dirt, ink or toner powder, and as the paper is moved through the printer the `tracks` are being left on the page.
When your printer leaves black lines, the lines indicate that there are excess toner powders on the rollers or transfer belt within the printer. As the paper is moved along by the rollers and transfer belt, any excess powder left on them can result in lines being left on the paper.
Vertical lines in prints are an early warning sign of a low ink cartridge, which may show up before the printer`s low ink alerts start. You can fix the problem by replacing the low cartridge. Gently shaking the drained cartridge a bit may help to get another few prints out of it without vertical lines.
The black lines on your laptop screen are usually caused by a hardware issue. This can happen when the laptop is overheating, or if you have spilled liquids on it. If the problem is due to overheating, then you should try to keep the laptop cool by placing it in a well-ventilated area or in front of a fan.

canon mx320 copies have blk line down the right side of copies
ANSWER : If you are using the ADF feeder to make copies, then check the small glass on the left side. If there is any dirt or whiteout on the glass, it will result in a line down that spot. You can confirm it by looking at the copy that has the line. If it is dirt on the glass, the line won’t go all the way from top to bottom. There will be a margin on each end.

A dark line has appeared running down the centre of the copies
ANSWER : Assuming you are using the ADF feeder, try cleaning the long thin glass to the left of the main copy glass. It seems that nobody realizes that this glass is used exclusively by the ADF for copying. More than 1/2 of the copiers I’ve worked on have white-out or dirt on this glass and nobody thinks to clean it. Any dirt or white-out on this glass will result in a line since the copy moves past the scanner and the stationary spot is perceived as a line.
