How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

To keep cartridges from drying out, always turn the printer off using the Power button, and wait until the Power light goes out before you pull the plug or turn off a power strip. This allows the printer to move the cartridges to a capped position.
Ink cartridges can dry out over time. If they are sitting in your machine for an extended period, they will eventually dry up and become unusable. The simplest way to combat this problem is by printing more frequently or running regular cleans and ink tests to ensure the nozzles remain clean.
Just add water to the jar and the ink will become liquid again. If you are in a hurry, crush the ink into small pieces, add water and stir. Voila you have ink. If you have a few hours, add water and stir occasionally.
How do you remove ink after it has dried? Put down a towel you don`t mind getting stained, and place the stained garment on top of it. Treat the stain with rubbing alcohol or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or hair spray and let sit for at least 10 minutes before blotting and rinsing with cold water.
Take a warm damp paper towel or coffee filter and blot the cartridge with the printhead facing down onto the paper towel. This will remove any dried ink on the printhead. Then, hold the cartridge with the printhead facing down against a dry paper towel for 2-3 minutes.
Ink chemists have invented numerous ways to make ink dry, but litho and letterpress inks dry primarily by two methods; absorption and oxidation. Absorption means that the ink soaks into the stock like water into a sponge.
Ink cartridges can dry out if they are sitting idle in your printer for an extended period of time. The best way to prevent an ink cartridge from drying out is by running a small print job every week, this keeps your cartridge primed.
The sponge end of a blocked printer head can be cleaned with only one liquid other than water. This liquid is isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol isn`t strong enough to melt the sponge but is still strong enough to dissolve the ink inside the blocked printer head.
The reason behind this problem is that some of the old material remains in the extruder due to the lower temperature needs of the new material. As a result, the old filament will not melt completely, and the residue left behind may cause the nozzle to clog in the long run.
If your ink pads are dried out, you can rehydrate them by using water.
After two years, you may still be able to use them. But, they can begin drying out and cause some potential issues if you use them on printers, such as getting a dried printhead. An opened ink cartridge can only live for about six months.
As a general rule, you can handle and work with photo inkjet prints as soon as the come out of your printer. They are “dry to the touch” but in reality it takes about 24 hours for an inkjet print to fully cure and dry.
Fill your bowl with rubbing alcohol (you can also use the cap of the alcohol bottle, as you`ll see in these examples) and put the Sharpie, tip down, in the liquid. Let it sit until you see a little ink running out into the alcohol. Then, cap your marker and let it sit for 15 minutes before using it again.
Hot water is best, but warm water will also work. You`ll also need a microfiber cloth to blot off as much ink out as possible, detergent, and rubbing alcohol to get the job done.
The most common reason for dry printer ink is the extremely high or low temperature in the storage area. This is especially true for rarely-used ink cartridges, as the ink inside doesn`t move around for temperature regulation. Also, if you don`t properly store the cartridges, they can dry quickly.
Fill a bowl with warm water (or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the printhead) and place the printhead directly in it. Let it sit for five minutes or so. Pull the printhead out of the water and use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to remove the dried ink.

If the ink level is sufficient, but the printer still does not print black ink, you may need to run a cleaning cycle. A cleaning cycle is a process that cleans the printer heads and removes any clogged or dried ink.
The simple answer is yes. After all, printer ink is a liquid and liquids, especially small quantities stored inside an ink cartridge will eventually dry out. If you buy ink from a reputable supplier and look after it as we describe below unused ink will be good for 12 months, and possibly much longer.

Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II ink dried in printer head.
ANSWER : This video shows how to remove the heads. Ignore his methods of cleaning them as they are really stupid. Best way to clean the heads is to run hot tap water into the screens and then flip it over and run the hot water on the heads. Repeat a few times until the water runs clear.
