The service alert refers to the ink pads. There are a number of porous pads in the printer that collect, distribute, and contain ink that is not used on printed pages. Ink is collected by these pads during the initial setup of the product, during cleaning cycles, and when printing borderless photographs.
If an error message appears indicating the printer`s ink pads are nearing the end of their service life, contact Epson support to replace them. The message will be displayed at regular intervals until the ink pads are replaced.
EPSON printer utilities allow you to check the current printer status and to perform some printer maintenance from your computer. To use the utilities, click the Utility tab in the printer software, then click the button for the utility that you want to use.
The error “Service Required” is usually indicated when the waste pads in the printer have reached a perceived saturation point.
Press the home button if necessary and select Settings > Maintenance > Replace Maintenance Box > See Guide. Open the maintenance box cover on the back of the product. Pull out the maintenance box carefully without tilting it. Warning: If ink gets on your skin, wash it thoroughly with soap and water.

How do I reset the ink levels for my product?
  1. Press the home button, if necessary.
  2. Press the left or right arrow button to select Maintenance > Reset Ink Level.
  3. Press the start button, the OK button twice, and then the start button again.

Epson c86 – service required – counter reset
ANSWER : you have to use the ink overflow reset utitlity. “EpsonIPRUtitly_A10.exe” This works on my C-86 when it is plugged into LPT1 and my system is WinXP (wont work in Win98). I have the file. BUT before that you must do something about the ink overflow tray.

Epson Artisan 835 print head cleaning question
ANSWER : I had the same problem. After reading the comments, I tried Liquid Wrench spray. 1st try got about sixty percent improvement. Tried again this time I let it set for about 10 min then did a head cleaning. Completely solved the problem. I am a little concerned about its use on plastic. So far so good.
