How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced technical support :

If your document has smudges, your Epson printer may be unclean. Dirt, dust, or toner can be the cause for smudges on your paper that are collected on the rollers of your printer as it passes through the paper. Cleaning the paper rollers guide from Epson will teach you how to do it.
It may be incorrect print settings, incompatible paper type, low quality ink, dirty print head or coming in contact with moisture.
Printer rollers leave unwanted marks on your documents

If the printer rollers leave unwanted marks on your document, use the included cleaning pad to clean the rollers. It may become necessary to clean the printer rollers in the following situations: When you use paper that is not distributed by EPSON.

If your Epson printer is printing out faint images, skipping lines, or is streaking your image with lines, chances are you have a clogged nozzle–a common problem many users have with Epson printers. It`s unavoidable that print heads clog over time as small amounts of ink residue dry up and collect in the nozzles.
Turn off any high speed settings in your product software. If you print on both sides of a sheet of paper, smudges may appear on the reverse side of heavily saturated or dark images. If one side of a sheet will contain a lighter image or text, print that side first. Adjust the density and/or ink drying time settings.
Smears and smudges on the paper can be caused by dirt, dust, or toner accumulated on the rollers or transfer belt as it passes through the paper. Cleaning your printer, particularly the rollers, is one of the options for removing black markings from paper.
Dots are typically caused by foreign material inside the machine (for example, paper dust, glue from labels or envelopes, paper clips, staples) sticking to or damaging the surface of the drum. Toner builds up on or sticks to these areas on the drum and creates black dots on the printed pages.
Clean the contacts

If the contacts between the cartridge and the printer are dirty or clogged, there is a high chance that this can be the main cause for the ink to leak on the paper. To properly clean the contacts, open the printing machine and remove the ink cartridges and place them on a clean piece of paper.

If your printer is consuming too much ink during printing, try these solutions: Make sure you selected the correct Media Type setting in the printer driver that matches the paper you loaded in the printer. The amount of ink used during printing is controlled by the Media Type setting.
This happens when the rollers or the transfer belt inside the printer get dirty or covered in excess dirt, ink or toner powder, and as the paper is moved through the printer the `tracks` are being left on the page. This is normally the case when the tracks on the page are located at either end.

Paper feeds straight through without printing on an Epson R2400
ANSWER : I was able to get it to print the internal test page by holding down the sheet paper feed button while turning the machine on — then continuing to hold the sheet paper feed button. It took several attempts, feeding a page straight through, but eventually it caught the sheet and printed. So it may be a timing issue as others have mentioned. It could still mean that the feed rollers are worn out. The back side of the large D-shaped feed roller has visible abrasion on it. The abrasion is difficult to see as the roller does not stay with the flat side exposed.
