When color ink is expended and black ink still remains, you can continue printing for a short time using only black ink. However, you should replace the expended ink cartridge(s) as soon as possible. See the following section to continue printing temporarily with black ink.
The printer will not operate if a black ink cartridge is expended or any cartridge is removed. If a color cartridge is expended, you may be able to continue printing temporarily with black ink. It`s best to always have extra cartridges on hand.

Method 1 – Bypassng Ink Cartridge on Epson Printer

Even if you select Black/Grayscale or Grayscale in the printer software, some color ink is still being used. A: Yes. You can use the scanning feature without worrying if there is ink in the ink cartridges installed in the all-in-one printer. However, all of the genuine Epson ink cartridges must be installed, even if depleted of usable ink and the printer displays the replace cartridge message.
If the ink level is sufficient, but the printer still does not print black ink, you may need to run a cleaning cycle. A cleaning cycle is a process that cleans the printer heads and removes any clogged or dried ink.
Settings and options
Selecting color or black and white: Color: Uses ink from all cartridges for full color prints. Black & White, Black Ink Only, or Monochrome: Uses the black ink cartridge only for normal or lower quality black and white prints.
If you cannot cancel printing from the computer, cancel using the printer`s control panel. Select System Preferences from the menu > Printers & Scanners (or Print & Scan, Print & Fax), and then select the printer. Click Options & Supplies > Options (or Driver). Select On as the Permit temporary black printing setting.
Monochrome printers often have room for a bigger cartridge, giving you a higher page yield, so you don`t have to replace the cartridge as frequently. Laser printers are usually preferred for black-and-white printing, as they typically print faster.
Set Default to Black and White
Right-click on the printer and click Printer properties. In the printer properties window, go to General tab and click Preferences button. In the Printing Preferences window, go to Paper/Output tab. Select Black and White.
Red ink light flashes One of the cartridges is low on ink. Check the message that appears on your screen to determine which cartridge is low. Make sure you have a replacement cartridge. Red ink light is on One of the cartridges is out of ink or not installed.
STEP 1 Change Printer Preferences in Windows
Click start and navigate to the Printers and Devices. Right-click your printer and select printing preferences. Then, click on the Grayscale button in the advanced tab to enable black-and-white-only printing.
Make sure the Black/Grayscale or Grayscale setting is not selected in your printer software. Run a nozzle check to see if any of the print head nozzles are clogged. Then clean the print head, if necessary. The ink levels may be low and you may need to refill the ink.
If the printer is printing black only, the Ink option in the printer driver may be set to Black instead of Color or a setting in the software may be set to print black only. Also, the print head nozzles may be clogged.
Refilled Epson 288 and 288XL ink cartridges will include a new smart chip, this chip will restore printing to normal operation. Remove orange protective cap and insert refilled cartridge into your printer.
Press the right or left arrow button to highlight the ink tank you refilled and press the OK button to select it. Repeat for each ink tank color you refilled. Press the start button to reset the ink levels, then press the OK button when the reset is complete.
Press and hold down the Cancel button for 3 seconds. When the message to reset the printer to default settings appears, press OK to reset the print settings. Note: This reset does not affect LCD contrast, Print Confirmation, or PictureMate Print Wizard settings.
Press the button on the chip-reset tool for several seconds until the LED light on the device goes off. Then, unlock the reset tool from the cartridge. Use the resetter with other cartridges and install them back into the corresponding slots in your printer. Voila!
Clean the Printhead
What is this? Sometimes, the printhead nozzles get clogged, due to which your printer fails to print black or any other color. The print output is also faded or of a different color. To fix it, you can clean the printhead physically or from the printer settings.
Your printer may not recognize the new ink cartridge, or the ink counter may read it as empty. Many printers have a cartridge reset feature that forces the machine to recognize the cartridge as new.
Modern black inks in marking pens are usually mixtures of a variety of colored pigments mixed with different liquids.
