This error occurs due to the chip on your cartridge still reporting a low or empty ink level from its previous use. The chip itself cannot be reset, so when the cartridge is refilled and then installed into a new machine it will still register as empty.
1. Replace ink cartridges that are low on ink or empty. 2. Make sure ink cartridges are snapped into place and are properly installed in their appropriate slot.
Because running on an empty cartridge for too long can cause your printhead to overheat resulting in irreversible printer damage. Some printers are designed to stop printing when an ink cartridge is empty.
Verify the ink cartridge(s) is inserted properly. Some cartridges snap in place, and if they are not inserted fully, the printer won`t print anything. If a lever is moved from its original position to allow for installation of ink cartridges, ensure it is returned to its original position.

More profit is often made from cartridge sales than printer sales and deploying firmware updates is one way they can force you to use their cartridges. Manufacturers may do this by pushing an update to temporarily block compatible cartridges from working in your printer.
Rubbing alcohol will dilute and release the ink, as will hairspray in many cases. Damp two paper towels with your solution of choice and sandwich the stain between the two. Start blotting the stain from both sides to lift the ink.
