How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

The Brother machine will display a `Replace Drum` or `Drum Stop` message when the machine has printed approximately 15,000 pages. The drums should be replaced as a set in order to maintain print quality. Unlike the toner cartridges, the drum change is not automatically detected by the machine when they are replaced.
A drum unit is a green metal cylinder or tube that carries a static electrical charge that attracts the toner powder from the toner cartridge and applies it to the paper as it passes through the printer. Therefore, you will always find that the drum unit is located very close to or even attached to the toner cartridge.
Separate drum units last quite a bit longer than a toner cartridge and typically should be replaced after the use of 3-4 toners. Your printer should inform you when it`s time to replace the drum, but you can usually tell your drum is on it`s last legs if you start to see black spots or lines across the page.
Faded or Blurry Prints

As the chemicals break down, the drum`s power to attract toner becomes weaker, while the edges between charged and uncharged areas become more blurred. This leads to prints with blurry edges and with areas that are gray instead of black.

There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 12,000 pages.
You`ll know the drum is dirty if you notice that the print quality has become blurry and features blank spots or oddly-colored spots despite having full toner cartridges. Horizontal lines across the printout when the paper passes over a dirty area are another sign that it`s time for some maintenance.
Just like computers, printers have volatile memory (RAM) that is removed when you turn the printer off. Volatile memory requires power to store the information. Deleting volatile memory is easy: Simply shut down or unplug your printer for a minute or so.
The Out of Memory message will appear on the Brother machine`s display when the machine`s storage capacity has been exceeded. The amount of memory used depends on the amount or type of data on the documents being faxed, copied, or printed from a computer.
Using an equalizer to remove drums

An equalizer (EQ) is an audio engineering tool that manipulates the frequency content of a music track. If you know the frequencies of drum elements in the song, you can minimize or remove them by using an equalizer. The usual frequencies of drum elements are: Kick: 80-150Hz.
