Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
I have the same problem with excess toner causing lines over the printed page. Have tried to find where the excess toner is stored but cannot do so. No green arrows; there are blue errors but there are no screws beneath these. Have tried removing adjacent screws, but this did not help. Does anyone have a picture of the actual site where the screws need to be removed; for the Dell 3010cn drum cartridge? Bernie

The toner cartridge is the container that holds the toner powder. The drum unit is an electrically charged cylinder that fuses that toner powder onto paper to create text and images. Both of these components are essential for producing a print.
There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 12,000 pages.
All laser printers require a toner cartridge and a drum unit to produce a print. However, some printers only need you to replace the toner cartridge, and others require that you regularly replace both the toner cartridge and the drum unit. Most printers use toner cartridges with the drum unit built into the cartridge.
The yield of a drum unit is approx. 15,000 pages (1 page/job). There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 15,000 pages.
Drum replacement is the practice, in modern music production, of an engineer or producer recording a live drummer and replacing (or adding to) the sound of a particular drum with a pre-recorded sample.
Finally, if your module is old, unreliable or broken, remember that you can simply swap it out for a new one and continue to use your existing pads. Before choosing a module, ensure your pads are compatible, which generally means avoiding using a Yamaha module with Roland pads, and vice versa.
Without a chip, your drum unit has no way of being able to associate itself with your Brother printer. As a result, you will get the “Replace Drum” message because your printer thinks that you`ve not installed a drum unit. On the right is a standard toner cartridge with a chip.
If the toner cartridge has run out of toner, then you will need to replace it. If the drum has been in the printer through several toner cartridge replacements, it`s likely that you`ll need to replace the drum unit. For both the image drum and the toner cartridge, signs of wear are black lines or spots on the pages.

The message `Replace Drum` will appear if the drum unit is at the end of its rated life. Brother recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges.

I replaced the black toner cartridge and now the printer shakes though it is fine when I set it for grayscale only prints
ANSWER : You need to unlock the carousel. Once you unlock it and remove the toners, ignore all the rest of the crap. Pick any color and align the cartridge slot on the left side like you would have it to remove the cartridge. Then pull out on the gear towards you on the right and drop it so the right slot is lined up as well. You can get it aligned pretty close by just eyeballing it visually. I’ve never seen the left side go out of alignment, just the right, so this method has worked for me everytime.

Toner cartridge full, printer displays: "empty needs replacing"
ANSWER : I once went to a customer who had a similar issue. They had installed new cartridges and judging from the box, they looked OEM. Strange thing was they felt empty when lifted and they were missing the chip on the outside that tells the printer it is installed and keeps track of how many copies were printed with that cartridge. The printer has no other way of knowing if the cartridge is full or empty.

Waste Toner Cartridge is empty but printer is still telling me to replace it
ANSWER : All of the ones I’ve seen are optical. Light shines through a transparent section of the waste box onto a photocell. If toner builds up past that area, it gives a warning to replace it. Possibly toner dust has gotten on the photocell.
