Your Brother machine may automatically enter black and white mode when one or more of its color ink cartridges reaches the end of its life. When this happens, the Touchscreen will read “Replace Ink – B&W 1-sided Print Only.” You cannot put your machine in black and white mode.
Go to Devices > Printers & scanners > select a printer > Manage. Then select Set as default. If you don`t see the Set as default option, the Let Windows manage my default printer option may be selected. You`ll need to clear that selection before you can choose a default printer on your own.
Updated: 02/01/2021 by Computer Hope. A default printer is a printer all print jobs are sent to unless otherwise specified. Having a default printer prevents a program from asking the user what printer they want to use each time they print.
Set Default to Black and White

Right-click on the printer and click Printer properties. In the printer properties window, go to General tab and click Preferences button. In the Printing Preferences window, go to Paper/Output tab. Select Black and White.

Go to Paper/Quality and select “Black & White” in the Color options. By default it`s Color. Click the OK button to save changes. Now, your printer is all set to print in Black & White.
For example, if you mainly print black and white text, then using the monochrome setting or investing in a monochrome printer is the best choice. Grayscale printing is better for black-and-white images, because of this setting`s ability to create various contrasting shades and finer details.
If one or more of the colours are missing from your printed document, the ink cartridges may not be installed correctly or nozzles in the print head may be clogged up. To solve this issue, do the following: Check the print quality and clean the print head. Install a new genuine Brother ink cartridge.
If your machine`s cyan, magenta, or yellow toners run out, you can choose Mono in the printer driver to allow you to keep printing. You`ll be able to keep printing until the black toner runs out.
By default, the Brother machine is designed to conserve ink. This will result in text documents appearing gray, dull, or faded instead of black. If you would like text to appear black, please complete the following steps: NOTE: With these settings, more ink will be used than when using default settings.
Right Click on the Lower Left Corner of the desktop, select Control Panel. Select Devices and Printers. Right Click on the printer`s icon, select Printing Preferences.
The login name for the Administrator is ”admin” (case sensitive) and the default password is ”access”.
Click [Start] – ([All apps] – [Brother] -) [Printer Setting Tool]. On the [Apps] screen, click [Printer Setting Tool]. From the Start menu, click [All Programs] – [Brother] – [Label & Mobile Printer] – [Printer Setting Tool]. The main window appears.

I replaced the black toner cartridge and now the printer shakes though it is fine when I set it for grayscale only prints
ANSWER : You need to unlock the carousel. Once you unlock it and remove the toners, ignore all the rest of the crap. Pick any color and align the cartridge slot on the left side like you would have it to remove the cartridge. Then pull out on the gear towards you on the right and drop it so the right slot is lined up as well. You can get it aligned pretty close by just eyeballing it visually. I’ve never seen the left side go out of alignment, just the right, so this method has worked for me everytime.
