Make sure the scanner is plugged into an electrical outlet and turned on, and that its cables are securely connected. If you previously saw a scanning option and you don`t see one anymore, try deleting the scanner (or multifunction printer) and adding it again.
Open the HP Print and Scan Troubleshooter
Make sure the printer is on and connected to your laptop. Select HP Print and Scan Doctor on the HP Customer Support page to download the troubleshooter. Click HPPSdr.exe to open the software`s window. Click Start and select the printer that doesn`t scan.
If a Firewall on your computer is active, it may be rejecting the necessary network connection needed for the network scanning software to operate properly. Disable the Firewall on your computer and try the network scanning again. Temporarily change your firewall/security settings to allow network connection.
Open your scanner
Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar. (You may have to scroll down.) Click the printer or scanner in the Printers list on the right, then click Open Scanner.
Check the Connection. Check the cable between the scanner and your computer is firmly plugged in at both ends. If possible, switch to a different cable to test for problems with the existing one. You can also switch to a different USB port on your computer to check if a faulty port is to blame.
In the Settings window, go to Devices > Printers & scanners. Under the Add printers & scanners section, select the Add a printer or scanner button. Wait for the computer as it tries to find nearby devices, both connected directly to your computer or via the network.

A missing or outdated scanner driver can cause your HP scanner not to work, so you should update your scanner driver up to date. There are two ways to update your scanner driver: manually and automatically.
Scanner drivers are located in /Library/Image Capture/Devices/ as Tetsujin so helpfully points out. These scanner drivers are App bundles, but quite a bit different than regular applications. An executable binary is inside Contents/MacOS, along with the obligatory plists, Resources, etc.
Turn the printer on and open the scanner – lift the scanner lid, load the document you wish to scan into the tray if your printer has an all-in-one paper feeder. Insert the document – place the document face-down in the scanner and use the arrow marking on the glass to help align your document in the correct place.
You can`t create PDF with free Adobe Reader, you need to have Adobe Acrobat to do that. If the software that came with your scanner can`t save the scan as PDF you have to use Adobe Acrobat to do that. With Adobe Reader you can only view, fill form fields, sign and add comments to a PDF.
On your computer, go to HP Scan and Capture (in English) to install the app from the Microsoft Store. After the app installs, click Launch or Open. If prompted to select a device, click Settings.

ANSWER : If you are using the ADF, all pages are scanned with the scanner stationary on the left side. There is a small glass above the scanner and if there is anything on it, dust, whiteout, ink etc. it will interpret it as a line. First solution would be to clean the glass with window cleaner and a paper towel. If that doesn’t solve it, then scan the page on the flat glass and see if the problem continues.

Scanning and copying faint image
ANSWER : The scanning is done by light bouncing off of some mirrors. Could be dust on one of the mirrors. Try shining a light down into the scanner unit and look at the mirror that is visible and see if it has dust coating on the side that is light.
