Check for a Generic Driver
If you cannot locate a Windows XP driver, see if a generic or universal driver is available for your printer model on the manufacturer`s website. HP, for example, offers a universal print driver that works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
In Windows, search for and open Add a printer or scanner . Click Add a printer or scanner, and then wait for Windows to locate available printers. If your printer is found, click it, and then click Add device to complete the driver installation. If your printer is not found, continue with these steps.
This software is often supplied on a disk by the printer`s manufacturer, but most printers will work with the drivers supplied with Windows XP. The driver software provided by the manufacturer may add extra features, such as giving you information about the ink levels.
The good news is that pretty much any printer purchased within the last four to five years – or any printer that you`ve successfully used with Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 – should be compatible with Windows 10.
The HP printer driver unavailable error usually indicates your printer is missing, corrupt or not recognized by the computer. You should just uninstall the current driver and install the latest correct printer driver.
In the Windows Settings search box, type “Printer,” then select Add a printer or scanner. In the Printers & scanners page, select Add a printer or scanner. Select your printer when you see it appear, then follow any additional instructions to install the printer driver.
Select Start , then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Scroll down to Related Settings and select Print server properties. Select the Drivers tab, and see if your printer is listed. If it is, you`re all set.
Check the printer connection status: Make sure the wireless signal is on, and the printer is connected to the same network as your computer or mobile device. If your printer has a light next to a Wireless icon or button , make sure the light is on. If it is off or blinks the printer is disconnected from the network.
