If your Canon printer isn`t recognising a compatible ink cartridge, this may be because the data on the cartridge chip is stamped with an empty status before it was remanufactured. Hold down the stop / cancel button for 5 seconds to bypass the `ink has run out` message and your cartridge should work.
If there is plenty of ink and the printer does not print, clean the Print Head then print the nozzle check pattern to ensure ink is ejected properly. If the problem is not resolved after performing Print Head Cleaning twice, carry out the Print Head Deep Cleaning.
Check1 Check the remaining ink level. Check2 Are print head nozzles clogged? Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles. For details on printing the nozzle check pattern, print head cleaning, and print head deep cleaning, see If Printing Is Faint or Uneven.
I replaced an ink cartridge, but my product shows that the ink is not recognized. What should I do? The ink cartridges may not have been installed using the correct procedure, or they may not be seated correctly. Follow the instructions below to correctly install and reseat the ink cartridges.
The most common reason a refilled ink cartridge does not work is that you didn`t reinstall the cartridge properly. Check the cartridge and make sure it is not dislodged or misaligned. If there is no visible sign of misinstallation, remove the cartridge and reinstall it.
The “Incompatible Cartridge” message may signal you that the cartridge was placed in the wrong slot. In case you get such an error, make sure the cartridge model numbers match your printer model and your country/region. After that, check if they are installed correctly in the corresponding slots.
Test Your Toner Density
To ensure this isn`t the issue, remove the toner cartridge, shake it a few times, and insert it back into the printer. If the next page you print is darker, that means that your printer is low on toner density. Next, try replacing a light printing toner cartridge with a fresh one.
Make sure that the power is turned on. Hold down the Stop button until the Alarm lamp flashes three times, then release it immediately. The machine starts cleaning the print head deeply. The cleaning will be complete when the ON lamp lights after flashing.

When color ink is expended and black ink still remains, you can continue printing for a short time using only black ink. However, you should replace the expended ink cartridge(s) as soon as possible.
What to Look For. Chances are you suspect a faulty ink cartridge due to your print quality declining. Streaks, smears and stripes on your printout are all signs of a bad cartridge, as is a lack of a particular color or a color appearing very faint. Sometimes the printer refuses to print if a cartridge is faulty.
To initialize the machine settings, press and hold the Stop button and release it when the Alarm lamp flashes 24 times. All the machine settings are initialized. The printheads on an ink cartridge can be become blocked if the printer is not used for a period of time, so it is recommended to print a few pages each month to maintain the print quality.
