Hi. My wife opened the lid with the printer on to replace the yellow toner and broke part of the left hinge. Now I cannot remove any of the toner/drum units. They are stuck. So I can only assume the hinge area has something to do with releasing the drum unit so it can be pulled out. I tried to find a button or a sensor etc. that is associated with the hinge with no luck. Still stuck. I did reset the toner for added life. ( A tip I found on this site, Thx. ) But does anyone know how I could release the drum unit Thx.

Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
I don’t know how they manage to stuff like that. The front lid lifts the drum/toner unit up on each side. I imagine what is happening is that the left side isn’t lifting and you’re trying to slide it out crookedly. Try lifting it by the handle so that both sides are up all the way and then pull it out.

How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

You`ll know the drum is dirty if you notice that the print quality has become blurry and features blank spots or oddly-colored spots despite having full toner cartridges. Horizontal lines across the printout when the paper passes over a dirty area are another sign that it`s time for some maintenance.
Drum Error typically appears when the corona wire on the drum unit needs to be cleaned or when the drum unit needs to be replaced.
The drum unit may need replacing if you notice the printer producing blurry, low-quality images. Black or colored toner spots on printouts also indicates a failing drum unit. In some cases, horizontal lines may develop across the printout every time the paper passes the failing part of the drum.
Carefully wipe off any dirty areas visible on the drum. If the drum unit is dirty, apply some rubbing alcohol onto your lint-free cloth and carefully wipe the body of the drum unit.
The biggest tell is misprinted pages. If you have a new Brother toner, and the printer still puts out pages with obvious streaking on them – it`s time for a drum unit replacement. Don`t let bad printouts make you seem unprofessional – replace or fix your Brother printer drum today!
15,000 pages (1 page/job). There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 15,000 pages.
The toner may also be compressed inside the cartridge, which may cause the cartridge components to force. As for the toner and the drum, they do not have an expiration date.
The Brother machine will display a `Replace Drum` or `Drum Stop` message when the machine has printed approximately 15,000 pages. The drums should be replaced as a set in order to maintain print quality. Unlike the toner cartridges, the drum change is not automatically detected by the machine when they are replaced.
If your machine continues to display “Replace Drum” after installing a new drum, the drum counter may not have reset properly. Whenever you replace the drum unit, the drum counter needs to be reset.

toner cartrigdes and drums
ANSWER : You can, but there are good knock-offs and bad ones. I’ve run into ones that come totally empty. Ones that don’t have the chips installed that identify themselves to the printer. Ones that have sat on a shelf for years and fail on installation. I could go on, but I’m sure you get the idea. I use http://directpreciseimaging.com/ Mostly because I set him up in business and he’s local to me. I have very few problems with his products.
