You do NOT have to install a new toner cartridge and you can still print when the TONER LOW message appears, but it is a good idea to have a new genuine Brother toner cartridge on hand for when the toner does reach its end of life.
Pop Out, Push In, Unplug. A simple trick on many Brother printers showing a “low toner” warning is to simply pop the cartridge out of the printer, wait a moment, and push it back in. This resets the printer memory and tells the machine to “look again” at toner levels.
The message `Toner Life End` indicates the toner cartridge has reached the end of its expected life. To clear the `Toner Life End` message, install a brand new, out of the box toner cartridge.
The most obvious sign of low toner cartridge is poor print quality. Streaking, lines or missed prints are all possible signs that cartridge replacement is imminent. If you have tried rocking the toner cartridge and are still getting poor prints, it is likely time to replace your cartridge.
Toner Sensor
These sensors are covered with toner when the cartridge is full, then become exposed over time as you print pages and the toner level declines. When the cartridge reaches a level set by the manufacturer, your low-toner indicator will light.
You`ll be able to keep printing until the black toner runs out. When the black toner runs out, you won`t be able to print until you replace it.
Toner Save Mode allows the printer to use less toner on each page. Activating this mode extends the life of the toner cartridge and reduces the cost per page compared to the normal mode; however, the print quality is reduced.

Waste Toner Cartridge is empty but printer is still telling me to replace it
ANSWER : All of the ones I’ve seen are optical. Light shines through a transparent section of the waste box onto a photocell. If toner builds up past that area, it gives a warning to replace it. Possibly toner dust has gotten on the photocell.

ANSWER : I have the same problem: whether printing or copying, the paper feeds almost up to the print head and then stops with a paper jam error. Can’t find any bits of paper stuck anywhere. Sure would appreciate some help. DCP-J315W
