If you install a new toner cartridge but the “Toner Low”, “Replace Toner” or “Toner Ended” error indication remains, the toner cartridge may not be installed correctly.
Sometimes Brother printer will still say “Low Toner”, “Replace Toner” or “Toner Empty” after installing a new toner or drum unit. The possible reason is that the printer failed to reset the counting gear on the toner cartridge. You need to manually reset the toner cartridge in order to make it work as a full new toner.
The message “Replace Toner” is intended to alert you that the toner cartridge has reached the end of its expected life. It is recommended that the toner cartridge be replaced.
The Brother machine will display a `Replace Drum` or `Drum Stop` message when the machine has printed approximately 15,000 pages. The drums should be replaced as a set in order to maintain print quality. Unlike the toner cartridges, the drum change is not automatically detected by the machine when they are replaced.
Verify you are using a NEW toner cartridge.
Swapping toner cartridges from one machine to another or installing a partially used toner cartridge may cause this problem. If you install a partially used toner cartridge, your Brother machine is unable to recognize toner consumption correctly which will cause this problem.
As the name suggests, ink cartridges use liquid ink to create images and text on printed pages. Whereas toner cartridges use powder, which is heated to create printed documents. OEM toner cartridges are made by the company that makes the printers they fit in while generic toner cartridges are toner cartridges that third party manufacturers make for branded printers. Generic toner cartridges are actually cartridges that are compatible to the brand of printer you`re using.
As a general rule, when a printer runs out of ink or toner, it stops printing legibly. Depending on the printer model, the unit may look to replace one colour with another. For example, if you run out of black ink, your printer could replace it with blue, in order to still print the document you need.
Shake it — Each printer cartridge contains toner in powder form. Over time, this powder can clump and become unevenly distributed, leading to streaks, uneven pages, and wasted toner. To extend the life of your toner, remove the toner cartridge, cover it with a paper towel, and shake to redistribute the powder.

If your machine`s cyan, magenta, or yellow toners run out, you can choose Mono in the printer driver to allow you to keep printing. You`ll be able to keep printing until the black toner runs out. When the black toner runs out, you won`t be able to print until you replace it.
