If your printer keeps jamming, you should know that the most common cause of a jam is misalignment of the paper. Paper needs to load in smoothly, completely flush with the tray. Overfilling the tray is a great way to ensure you will be spending some personal time getting to know the inside of a printer.
Low-quality paper leaves an accumulation of tiny paper bits often referred to as “paper dust” inside the machine. This “dust” is one of the top causes of paper jams. More dust means more jams. Besides jams, the dust also contributes to poor-quality prints and causes machine parts to wear at a faster rate.
A piece of paper stuck in the paper tray or inside the printer can create a paper jam. Paper jams can occur for a variety of reasons, such as overloading the paper tray, loading different thicknesses of paper in the tray, or using paper that isn`t appropriate for your particular printer.
Paper Jams

This is a common laser printer problem. Primary causes include grime, dust, worn rollers, or incorrect paper weight. The most basic way to prevent paper jams is simply through regular cleaning of your printer. Also, replace parts as needed.

It`s important to replace the drum promptly when it`s low to avoid any further damage to the printer and to maintain optimal print quality. A bad drum may cause paper jams because it can cause the toner to be unevenly distributed on the paper, leading to jams or misfeeds.
You may be putting too much paper into the paper tray. It should never be overfilled as it can often cause a jam. If you only put the amount of paper you`re going to use for one printing task, you`re less likely to suffer a jam. Also, make sure the paper fits the tray and that it`s inserted correctly.
An error in the cartridges, the heads clogged by dry ink, a very low level in your consumables, a bad connection between the computer and the printer, a damaged cable, a jam in the print queue…, there are many reasons why your Brother printer may stop printing or print poorly even though you have not jumped the ink …
A paper jam is when paper or other printed material gets stuck or lodged in a printer and cannot eject. When this occurs, the printer does not function properly until the paper is manually removed.

Paper Jam Every Time
ANSWER : In paper jam situations, always look at the exact place the leading edge stops. That is where the cause lies. I had a Brother last week doing similar jams. It was stopping at the feed roller that lies just after the pickup roller. In one of the stupider design features I have seen, that roller is engaged only when the paper tray is shoved in. What purpose that serves is beyond me. The spring loaded engage arm that engages a gear to the roller had fallen off and wasn’t usable anymore. I installed it back in the engaged position and locked it in place. Printer worked great after that.

BROTHER MFC 490CW/ MFC 210C
ANSWER : The industry says that at least once a month you should print something, even a test print page to avoid the ink drying up in the print heads. Most printers including Brother will turn themselves on occasionally to clean themselves. I do not recommend refilling your ink cartridges yourself. You can buy ‘non-OEM compatible refilled’ ink cartridges for you printers very cheaply but not all that make/sell these are of the same quality. So if this is of interest to you then you need to shop around until you find a good & reputable compatible non-OEM ink seller.
