Drum Error typically appears when the corona wire on the drum unit needs to be cleaned or when the drum unit needs to be replaced. If you replaced the drum and the message appeared or continued to appear immediately after installing the replacement drum, click here.
A drum unit is a green metal cylinder or tube that carries a static electrical charge that attracts the toner powder from the toner cartridge and applies it to the paper as it passes through the printer. Therefore, you will always find that the drum unit is located very close to or even attached to the toner cartridge.
Use an activated toner cloth, stretched tautly, and carefully wipe down the drum exterior to remove loose toner. Then use a cotton ball saturated with 99% pure isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Clean any patches of stubborn toner still attached to the drum. Use toner cloth or lint-free microfiber to clean the print rollers.
Other Signs and Symptoms

The most obvious is most common on laser color printers and can be detected by a flashing message on the printer display screen. Other signs of a bad printer drum include printing blank pages, printing gray pages and strange sounds coming from the printer as it prints.

The Brother machine will display a `Replace Drum` or `Drum Stop` message when the machine has printed approximately 15,000 pages. The drums should be replaced as a set in order to maintain print quality. Unlike the toner cartridges, the drum change is not automatically detected by the machine when they are replaced.
A degraded drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed page even if you just inserted a new printer toner. While a broken drum unit won`t break your printer, it will just fail to stop printing at a certain point.
The drum unit may need replacing if you notice the printer producing blurry, low-quality images. Black or colored toner spots on printouts also indicates a failing drum unit. In some cases, horizontal lines may develop across the printout every time the paper passes the failing part of the drum.
What`s the difference between a drum unit and toner cartridge? The toner cartridge is the container that holds the toner powder. The drum unit is an electrically charged cylinder that fuses that toner powder onto paper to create text and images. Both of these components are essential for producing a print.
Pour a quart of white vinegar into the wash drum with a cup of baking soda. Use a stiff nylon brush and vinegar to scrub the interior of the wash drum. At the hottest temperature setting, run a wash cycle with this cleaning solution in an empty washer; select the heavy-duty wash cycle if available.
1 Prepare cleaning material. For cleaning, HP recommends using HP Equipment Cleaning Wipes, but you can use an HP-approved lint-free wipe and deionized or distilled water. Note: If dark spots appear on back side of prints, clean drum screen.
nounComputers. a line printer that uses a rotating drum with raised characters, against which the paper is pressed.
If you have washing machine cleaning detergent, use it with the drum cleaning program. Otherwise, do not add any detergent while you a running a program to clean. If you can, wipe down the inside of the drum and the door with a soft cloth after each use to remove any remaining moisture.
Print head cleaning consumes some ink. To avoid wasting ink, clean the print head only if print quality declines; for example, if the printout is blurry or the color is incorrect or missing.
~ Fill pin holes, and small cracks, nicks, or cuts with Super Glue Gel – lightly sand flush when dry. ~ Patch over large holes and tears with a scrap of goat skin super glued thoroughly under the area. Use a dowel to place skin patch on underside of head in tight quarters.
Found within any laser printer, a toner drum is a component which transfers the toner powder stored within the cartridge onto the paper. It comes in the form of an electrically-charged cylinder. The printer will take toner powder from the cartridges and apply it on to the drum unit`s roller.
Drum heads wear out!

Drummers who practice a lot should probably change heads once every six months. Drummers who own their own drums can probably change the heads without any problem, but if it is the first time, it might be a good idea to have someone at the drum shop, or an experienced drummer, teach you.

There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 12,000 pages.
It`s important to replace the drum promptly when it`s low to avoid any further damage to the printer and to maintain optimal print quality. A bad drum may cause paper jams because it can cause the toner to be unevenly distributed on the paper, leading to jams or misfeeds.
You can extend the drum life and keep it clean by occasionally cleaning the corona wire. You can simply do this by sliding the little plastic piece attached to the corona wire back and forth a couple of times. After you replace your drum, don`t forget to reset it.
Which of the following is the MOST likely symptom of a dirty drum or roller in laser printer? lines or splotches repeated at regular intervals on the print job.
Print blemishes after inserting a new cartridge. Slow print times. Abnormal noises. Paper jams and ripped paper.
They recommend always changing your drum heads before you start recording. Otherwise, if you`re just practicing and playing normally, you should find yourself replacing heads every six months or so. Six months isn`t a hard rule, and for some could be a risky amount of time to wait.
Do Drum Units Expire? Fortunately, just like laser toners, drum units don`t expire, so you can safely keep extra units on hand if printing is a core part of your business or routine. The only consumable that expires is ink, which is printed on the cartridge itself.
If your machine continues to display “Replace Drum” after installing a new drum, the drum counter may not have reset properly. Whenever you replace the drum unit, the drum counter needs to be reset.

ANSWER : The industry says that at least once a month you should print something, even a test print page to avoid the ink drying up in the print heads. Most printers including Brother will turn themselves on occasionally to clean themselves. I do not recommend refilling your ink cartridges yourself. You can buy ‘non-OEM compatible refilled’ ink cartridges for you printers very cheaply but not all that make/sell these are of the same quality. So if this is of interest to you then you need to shop around until you find a good & reputable compatible non-OEM ink seller.
