Check the ink status from the control panel

Press Menu. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to select Ink or Ink Management and press OK. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to select Ink Volume and press OK. Press Stop/Exit.

The most obvious sign of low toner cartridge is poor print quality. Streaking, lines or missed prints are all possible signs that cartridge replacement is imminent. If you have tried rocking the toner cartridge and are still getting poor prints, it is likely time to replace your cartridge.
On your computer, in the Windows Notification Area (bottom-right corner of your Windows desktop), right-click the printer icon. In the printer menu, select the Properties or Preferences option. In the printer settings window, the ink or toner levels are displayed for the currently-installed cartridge(s).

A typical ink cartridge will yield 250 to 300 pages depending on the color density of the prints. The yield of a typical toner cartridge in a laser printer is between 2,500 and 3,000 pages. Some larger laser printers can even have toners that will yield up to 30,000 pages!
When you get close to two years, the ink sponge inside the cartridge can start to dry up. More modern printers also recognise when a cartridge has passed 2 years old and will ask you to replace it.
The message TONER LOW appears on the display when one of the toner cartridges is running low on toner, but the cartridge has not reached its end of life. This is just an alert that the toner cartridge will reach its end of life in the near future.
How Long Should You Leave Toner in Your Hair? Leaving toner in your hair can take as quick as a minute but should not exceed 45 minutes. There`s no exact time because how long the toning process will take differs from person to person. It will depend on the hair`s starting color and health.
When “Toner Low” is displayed, prepare a new toner cartridge. If you do not have a new toner cartridge at hand and need printing before obtaining it, you can continue printing about 20 pages(*1) by opening and closing the front cover or the output tray. Print quality is not guaranteed.

How long does 1ml of ink last? 1ml of fountain pen ink will typically write for 25 pages with a medium nib, 20 pages with a broad nib, and 64 pages with a fine nib.
A common measure of ink thickness is in units of microns. A micron is 1 millionth of a meter. In practice, however, it is not easy to determine the thickness of an ink in microns directly. The amount of ink on a substrate often is expressed in terms of weight of ink per area of print.
The toner cartridge shelf life is 2 years if the protective bag is unopened or 6 months after the protective bag is opened.
Black – 5000 pages & color 7000 pages @ standard coverage area.
If you feel that the ink cartridges run out very quickly every time you replace the ink, it`s possible you are printing high density documents frequently. The ink consumption varies very much on print density.
Ever wonder why your inkjet printer uses a lot of ink? The reason behind this is due to the design of the print head. The print head is the small electronic device which spits the ink onto the paper after it has gone out of the ink cartridges.
*What`s 5% Page Coverage? It means only 5% of the page has ink or toner on it. This is what a page with 5% page coverage would look like: Think of the page yield as a rough estimate and not a hard number because there are many factors that determine the actual number of pages your cartridge prints.
Several factors may cause the product to print blank pages, such as print settings, low ink, or the product itself. Check the following: Make sure the product is placed on a flat, stable surface that extends beyond the base in all directions. The product won`t operate properly if it`s tilted or at an angle.
A good rule of thumb: if your printer is more than seven years old, you may want to start pricing new units. In this case, even a relatively inexpensive component is not worth the investment.
While ink does not have an expiration date, it will eventually become unusable. Whether this is in 5 years or 50 years depends on how the ink has been stored and used. With proper care, a bottle of fountain pen ink should be safe to use until the very last drop.
An original printer cartridge that comes with your printer is likely closer to 24 months, while a compatible cartridge may come closer to 36 months. Check the expiration dates so you can prioritize use of cartridges with earlier dates. Think of the expiration date more in terms of a dry good than a carton of milk.
Check that the correct paper is properly loaded into the printer and is not jammed. Replacing damaged cables, plugging in loose or disconnected cables, and fixing paper jams as necessary may resolve the issue.
This error occurs due to the chip on your cartridge still reporting a low or empty ink level from its previous use. The chip itself cannot be reset, so when the cartridge is refilled and then installed into a new machine it will still register as empty.
The error “Ink Box Full” means that the internal ink absorber or flushing box will need to be replaced. The need to replace these items and the time period before replacement is dependent on the number of purges and flushes required to clean the ink system.

BROTHER MFC 490CW/ MFC 210C
ANSWER : The industry says that at least once a month you should print something, even a test print page to avoid the ink drying up in the print heads. Most printers including Brother will turn themselves on occasionally to clean themselves. I do not recommend refilling your ink cartridges yourself. You can buy ‘non-OEM compatible refilled’ ink cartridges for you printers very cheaply but not all that make/sell these are of the same quality. So if this is of interest to you then you need to shop around until you find a good & reputable compatible non-OEM ink seller.
