How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

Smudges or dots on printed pages are usually caused by foreign material (paper dust, glue from labels or envelopes, toner residue, paper clips, staples, etc.) sticking to or damaging the surface of the drum unit. Cleaning the drum unit typically resolves this issue.
Make sure the printer platen is not dirty with ink. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet. Lift the scanner cover until it locks securely in the open position. Clean the machine`s printer platen(1) and the area around it, wiping off any scattered ink with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
The best way to prevent smearing is to make sure you give the ink time to dry before picking up the copy or copies. It doesn`t take long, maybe 10-15 seconds. If that doesn`t work, try changing your printer settings for a lower quality print job. You generally have a choice, Best, Normal or Draft.
Toner Rub Off or Smudging issues occur when toner is improperly or incompletely fused to the paper. This can occur if the incorrect paper is used, paper tray settings are incorrectly configured, or there is an issue with the Fusing unit.
When it is not fusing correctly, toner can become smudged on the paper if non-fused toner sticks to the rollers. In the case of a bad drum or leaking toner, it is best to replace the entire toner cartridge. If you suspect a bad fuser is at fault, it is best to have the laser printer serviced at a repair shop.
Use isopropyl alcohol or ethanol according to the manufacturer`s safety guidelines, as applicable. Wipe the roller with a lint-free cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. After cleaning the roller, make sure that no lint or other material remains on the roller.
(smʌdʒ ) verb. If you smudge a substance such as ink, paint, or make-up that has been put on a surface, you make it less neat by touching or rubbing it. […]
Why is it important to clean a laser printer? Printing is vital to all businesses so ensuring your laser printer is thoroughly cleaned is crucial as it allows your machine to continue working efficiently. Cleaning a laser printer is easy with the correct equipment, however they are prone to dust and debris.
When ink dries on a ball point of a pen, the ball no longer rolls smoothly on paper to evenly distribute ink, which creates blots of ink on a page. The same is true for inkjet printers when ink dries on the printhead — blots of ink appear on a printed page.
A printing defect characterized by a blurry and unclear printed image, caused by a wide variety of press and handling conditions.
If the contacts between the cartridge and the printer are dirty or clogged, there is a high chance that this can be the main cause for the ink to leak on the paper. To properly clean the contacts, open the printing machine and remove the ink cartridges and place them on a clean piece of paper.
Add Gum Arabic to Your Ink

You dip your pen into the ink, put nib to paper, and, moments later, you discover that the calligraphy ink is bleeding. Don`t despair: instead, grab some gum arabic! Gum arabic comes in both powder and liquid forms. I usually use liquid gum arabic, but have successfully used powder as well!

Because the ink is made from a base of water, if the ink is wet after printing, the ink will run and the print can be damaged or ruined. Inks which are pigmented or oil-based inks, however, are made to be water-resistant; meaning your prints shouldn`t run, smear or smudge if they get wet.
Streaks, smears and stripes on your printout are all signs of a bad cartridge, as is a lack of a particular color or a color appearing very faint. Sometimes the printer refuses to print if a cartridge is faulty.
Hold a piece of lens tissue above the mirror and place a few drops of acetone on the paper. Lower the lens tissue onto the optic and pull it over the surface. Note that the dry part of the tissue helps remove acetone residue. Repeat the above step until the optic is clean.
Remove the roller cover inside the printer. Pull up on the tabs, then slide the rollers to the left to remove them. Insert the replacement rollers and slide them to the right until they click into place. Replace the roller cover and press down on it until it clicks into place.
Printer rollers are the tiny rubber wheels inside your printer that move sheets of paper through the printer. The roller that lifts the paper from the paper tray is called the paper uptake roller.
Water based inks are simple: wipe off the excess ink with wiping canvas or with some newsprint, then just rinse with water. You may use a mild soap and lukewarm water. Dry thoroughly. If you are using oil based inks, first wipe off the ink with some paper or old rag.
Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one. The yield of a drum unit is approx. 15,000 pages (1 page/job). There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on.
Buying extra drums for your office laser printer saves money and time, but the components do have a shelf life. Shelf life is a period of time the components can be stored and still be suitable for use. A laser printer drum`s shelf life is approximately two years if the drum is still in its protective bag.
Separate drum units last quite a bit longer than a toner cartridge and typically should be replaced after the use of 3-4 toners. Your printer should inform you when it`s time to replace the drum, but you can usually tell your drum is on it`s last legs if you start to see black spots or lines across the page.
Use an activated toner cloth, stretched tautly, and carefully wipe down the drum exterior to remove loose toner. Then use a cotton ball saturated with 99% pure isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Clean any patches of stubborn toner still attached to the drum. Use toner cloth or lint-free microfiber to clean the print rollers.
You can reuse it without affecting the quality of the paint application and over time it will end up paying for itself. Reuse your rollers with these 3 simple steps: Scrape the roller after use but do not let it dry out. Create an airtight cover with plastic wrap or a plastic bag—keeping it moist is key.
Color Laser Printer or Black & White Laser Printer

As print quality goes down over time, this will be a reason to replace the color printer. We find a black and white printer can sometimes last 10 years or more and most color laser printers are replaced every 3 to 5 years.
